We (Family of 5) stayed here for 6 nights from 6th Oct 2011. Having last stayed here three years back we expected it to be reasonable but were concerned by the awful reviews on Trip Advisor after we'd booked. We chose two Lake View Rooms with a connecting door on the ground floor. The setting and the grounds of the hotel are superb with lovely views of the lake and surrounding countryside from the room. The complex has two swimming pools and a whirl pool bath which were clean and unoccupied for the entirety of our stay, meaning that we had them all to ourselves. Parking is free of charge and there were plenty of spaces. Unfortunately the on site bar & restaurant, Quails Inn, is now closed and has been for a couple of years, so we ate at the local Golf Course, Gordons on the Green, which is only a 5 minute walk away, and the food was excellent. Prices are very reasonable with a meal for three adults and two children coming in at around $80 + tip. We also ate at the Old California Restaurant Row which is about 2 miles away on San Marcos Bvd. They have a selection of about 25 restaurants and we can recommend the Thai Restaurant on the front row. Also try Ruby's Diner at Carlsbad as the food there was also excellent. The place is near to the airport (30 miles), Sea World, Legoland, Sandiego Zoo & Safari Park and Disney at Aneheim. The beach is 8 miles away.
The hotel staff were polite and extremely helpful and sorted out any issues we had. To our surprise, breakfast was provided free of charge, consisting of a self serve selection of tea, coffee and juices, cereal, toasted bagels, buns, yogurt and muesli bars. This saved us around $35 per day not having to eat breakfast out.
The hotel complex is well maintained in most areas but is in need of works in other areas. The place has been under new ownership since May 2011 and it was clear during our stay that they were in the process of injecting some well needed cash into the complex, with many parts being upgraded during our stay. The works did not detract from our stay either. The rooms are dated, but are clean and comfortable, but there are areas that would benefit from a fresh coat of paint.
If you are expecting five star accommodation then don't stay here. I would put this place at three star. It is clean comfortable and a pleasant place to stay and I would recommend it to others and would definitely stay here again.
Room Tip: Pick a Lake View Room rather than one that looks onto the pool as I suspect these can be rather nois...
