The Hotel Elan used to be in the Howard Johnson chain, but they parted ways about four months ago. It is about 1 mile south of the centre of San Jose, and definitely "on the wrong side of the tracks" in a downbeat part of town. It's true that it is rather basic, as American motels go, and that the manager is taciturn and lacking in people skills. But you get what you pay for. My room was large and (relatively) well equipped. The bed was comfortable. The WiFi was free and fast. There was a (somewhat infrequent) bus service into town, and the breakfast was ample, given the minimal setting in the lobby. It could have been worse.
