We needed to stay in a hotel near Dana Point to attend a close friend's wedding which was the following day. My husband was part of the wedding entourage, so we decided to book a room instead of driving back and forth from L.A. two days in a row. Since we were on a budget and staying for only 1 night, finding this hotel seemed like it was a great buy.
After reading only 5 'great' reviews, I was sold. A couple days before the event, I started to read more reviews and realized there were so many 'disappointed' reviews. Since I had booked it already, I kept convincing myself that it wouldn't be that bad.
Here are the Pros: Very easy access once you exit the freeway and friendly staff members.
Here are the Cons: Our room reeked of that old musty, mildew smell. We stayed on the first floor and could not sleep because we kept hearing the bed on the floor above us, creaking. You can hear the the footsteps of other guests also-little do they know, that due to thin walls, the footsteps were amplified and sounded like dinosaurs were roaming about.
So much for the remodeled bathrooms-no matter how much you keep your hands in the sink, water finds a way to drip on the floor. The shower/bathtub was perplexing...no matter how much we played with the drain switch, the water would not drain fast enough, leaving water to your ankles by the time you were finished taking a shower. So much for a shower liner, there was only the shower curtain, so again, the floor was covered with water. The hair dryer did not work properly and the coffee pot for the coffee maker was missing.
Don't stay here in the summer. The A/C has a mind of it's own. There were only 3 controls: heat, cold, and temperature. We had it set on 72 degrees and this thing turned on and off whenever it felt like! It would turn on for 5 minutes straight, then turn off for half an hour, then turn on again for 2 minutes, and then turn off! We were trying to find a button that would let it continuously blow air, but no such luck. When it would turn off, no matter how low or high we would press the temperature gage, it would not turn on. So frustrating.
Finally, the 'continental breakfast'-I would neither call continental or breakfast-consisted of what seemed like day old donuts. The sugar frosting on some of these donuts seemed like they were dipped in water before serving. It was gross, but thank goodness for the coffee!
It wasn't even worth it to complain since we were checking out the next day. We wouldn't even stay here again if it was free.
Here's a tip, spend the extra $25-$50 on a nicer hotel...it will be definitely worth it.
