“Home Away from Home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Within a year, we have stayed at this location a dozen times. We love the suite arrangement and love the location although there isn't much to do in Salinas really. It's always clean and comfortable. Front desk is always pleasant to converse with. One nagging negative is the very crowded breakfast arrangement. There's no place to set your coffee cup as you're getting sugar and cream for it. People are always crowding around the food. When food items and drinks run out, the food personnel appear upset when reminded that food has run out. I think the food area is poorly designed and the effect is irritating. We have skipped breakfast and have gone to IHOP across the street. The particular feature is clearly unfortunate though.

“Lousy Marriott property”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

I'm platinum with Marriott and this is one of the worst properties I've stayed at. I think the floor, ceiling and walls are made of papier mache since you can easily hear average level conversations on all sides, and the bed slopes to the bathroom. The room is adequately clean so I can't give it a 1. But to top it off, the staff checked me in, then 20 minutes later checked someone else into the same room. To my surprise, someone opens the door. When I check in with the desk the next day (because they invalidated my room key) they said, "oh sorry. That's my fault." That's it.

This place doesn't sour me on all Mariott properties, but I certainly wouldn't come back.

Room Tip: Top floor corner unit to only have to share a wall with two other tenants.

“Hotel-fine... town-pitiful”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

My husband had a last minute trip on the west coast so we packed the kids and went along without reservations or any idea of what we would be doing. We rented a car and drove down the coast. It was a busy weekend on the coast and all of the hotels were either booked or upwards of $400 a night. My husband found a Residence Inn available that claimed to be "Salinas/Monterey." The hotel was fine; it was a Residence Inn. My only complaint was the toenail I found in the bed throw... but then again, as an avid traveler, I should know better than to touch a bed throw. Our issue was Salinas. Salinas is a town that shows a skeleton of glory days gone by. It looks like it was once a lovely small town. Unfortunately, time and the economy has killed this town...DEAD. There is nothing there. We weren't expecting much; this was just a place to spend the night. But seriously... there is nothing there. Our dinner option was Applebee's. We don't do many chain restaurants and this reminded us why. It made us a little sad, actually. If you just need a place to rest your head and don't mind paying $200 a night for that pillow... then have at it. I would have given it a higher rating but for the fact that they included Monterey in their advertisement. It's pretty misleading to not know where you are and see Monterey/Salinas and then drive 35 minutes off course to the middle of a poor, empty little town with nothing but an Applebees and a random chinese restaurant. Avoid this town if you can. I mean no offense to it's residents, but if you are on vacation, it's nowhere you need to be...

Room Tip: Typical Residence Inn

“Very good breakfast buffet”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

Staff were wonderful, especially in the breakfast room. Very good breakfast buffet (included in room rate) with many choices, including fresh fruit, real oatmeal, belgian waffles, and other hot items. Also liked the buffalo wings and salad bar at the social hour. Two-bedroom suite was fine, a bit smaller than other Residence Inn locations where we've stayed. Appointments are in need of updating, especially the TVs. Room rate was $210, and guess we expected nicer decor at that price.

“Very nice stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

Stayed here with my family of 5, my mother and my nephew. We had a 2 room suite with 2 queens and a sofa bed. The hotel provided a pack-n-play for our 2 yr. old. The 7 of us fit perfectly even though the website states that it only sleeps 5. Very clean. Nice pool. Wonderful breakfast. A bit of a drive if visiting coastal cities such as Monterey and Santa Cruz, but will stay here again if ever passing through.
