I've been meaning to write this review for sometime.
My son was married in St. Helena last October. It was harvest and Columbus Day Weekend. Napa Valley was very crowded. Most of our wedding guests traveled cross country to attend the wedding, and I believe that every B&B and hotel in the area (St. Helena, Calistoga, Napa, Yountville) accommodated at least one of our invited guests. It's not my intention to take anything away from the other B&B's and hotels, but many of our guest commented that we had kept the best accommodations for ourselves.
The location of the inn was fantastic, so central to everything. A easy stroll into town. It was such fun running into someone you were excited to see in the shops, or in the restaurants, or singing at karaoke. The location of the inn made it possible for many of our guests to come back for a glass of wine after shopping or dinner. No one could resist the warm and inviting fireplace in the backyard patio with ample seating and plenty of logs stacked up for your use.
The inn itself was immaculate, each room lovely and unique (we booked all three rooms). Beds were very comfortable. The steam showers to die for. Every breakfast was better than the one before and the coffee was delicious. We've stayed at many B&B's (we prefer them) and the interesting thing about how Sally runs the Red Door Inn was that breakfast was on our timetable. She would ask us what time we would like breakfast and what our schedule was so our room could be cleaned. We were able to sit around the breakfast table as long as we wanted and coffee was always fresh and available. Friends would stop by and Sally would put another cup out for them to enjoy coffee with us.
My husband renamed her Radar (he was a huge MASH fan), but I can't say enough about Sally. She was always there when we needed something and then would quietly leave us to enjoy the inn as if it were our own home - but as soon as we needed her - there she was offering a helpful hand, no matter how big or small, it was taken care of with a cheerful smile. She did all the usual things - restaurant suggestions, wineries - you name it and yet managed to be unobtrusive.
I realize that most wedding destinations get 5* reviews, and I've always wondered if it's the destination or frame of mind. It's both. One compliments the other. St. Helena is a beautiful place to have a wedding, but Sally and the Red Door Inn made us feel at home, relaxed, rested, and added to our joy.
In truth, never having stayed at the Red Door Inn, we booked based on the reviews, but our wedding guests were right - we kept the best for ourselves.
