“Get What You Pay For!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Quality Inn, Sacramento

This Inn is pretty good in terms of price. I saw this hotel as the best low price in Sacramento. However, you get what you pay for.

I had to get to this hotel in a last minute trip. They were very accommodating and got me a room on the third floor. There is an interesting security precaution of walking up the stairs to the gate that guards the second and third floors and you put in your room key into the slot to unlock. Clever.

The room I got was clean and presentable, nice Queen bed that was not too hard or soft. Good heater for the cold winter Sacramento nights. However, the shower ran pretty much hot and cold when it wanted to. Even with the fine finesse of the shower head and faucet, it was nearly impossible not to freeze or burn. I took a very short shower!

The next day I got a new room because I found I needed to stay one more night. This time I got a room on the second floor. Beware that the office people lock their door at night so you have to get their attention and knock on the door for them to open up. Not sure why. The neighborhood looked safe to me.

Anyway, the complementary coffee was there, but NO coffee machine! And when I tried to use the auto hairdryer, it burned out. And watch their alarm clocks. I found that the previous guest apparently set the clock for 7:30 AM or so. The staff should turn the radio/alarms off when taking care of the room for the new guest.

Complimentary breakfast is not bad. Scrambled eggs and sausage, coffee, juice and some great California oranges top the menu.

Bottom Line: The staff are friendly and the maid staff know what they’re doing which is great. But the lack of attention to detail, water pressure and heat needs more attention from management. Oh, there is a TripAdvisor logo on the window, so they do read the reviews!

Room Tip: Lower floors have better water pressure and you won't get the hot/cold water experience. Down 1...

“Good value budget stay in Downtown”

Four of us stayed here on the recommendation of a guidebook during an impromptu overnight stop in Sacramento. It looks a little shabby from the outside, but for the price, all in all it is an excellent deal. I think we paid around $90 for the room and that was split between four - bargain!

The receptionist was very helpful taking us to see a couple of rooms and working out a deal for us. We chose one of the larger corner rooms with two queen beds and found it perfectly acceptable. Sure, it's a bit dated but it was clean and in a good condition with all the usual motel facilities.

The free parking was a bonus and the breakfast was a plesant surprise with boiled eggs and make your own waffles in addition to the usual pastries and juice. There is also a small pool but we didn't try it.

The location can't be beat as you are an easy stroll away from lots of restaurants and sights plus if you happen to be there on the second Saturday of the month (as we fortuitously were), you're right in the midst of the art gallery walk.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are the largest and check out the excellent Sunday farmers market in Sacramento.

“Good value & location for the budget traveler.”

As others have said, this is an old property.

I used Choice Hotels rewards for my stay and found 8,000 points per night with the downtown location a good value.

Check-in with Frances was friendly and efficient. The elevator is slow, but functioned fine. My room on the 3rd floor was clean and spacious with a mini fridge. The comforter under the bedspread was a box-stitched down-like comforter that seemed brand new. Pillows and towels were fine. My bare feet were a little dirty from walking around on the carpet. The bathroom was clean and well-stocked with towels, tissue and shampoo / soap.

I didn't hear any noise from next door neighbors, if I had any. Street noise wasn't noticeable maybe because of the fan or a/c running. No problems with the [free] wifi signal.

I did not use the pool, which is next to the lobby. It wasn't sparkling clean, but looked like it needed a little filtering.

Breakfast was good considering it's typical American hotel Continental - all carbs, no proteins - cereals, yogurt, pastries, muffins, juice and coffee. The waffle maker was a plus.

Safety wasn't an issue. As a solo female traveler, I never felt unsafe walking in the area day or evening and appreciated the need for key card at the gate to the elevator.

There's a Starbuck's with limited hours [8pm Mon-Sat, 6pm Sun] right around the corner at 15th & H St. Many restaurants 2+ blocks away along J Street.

Overall, my experience was very good. I would definitely stay there again.

PS - If you're looking to use your Choice points and don't want a property with exterior corridors, the Clarion a half-block away is 10,000 per night. Check for my review there too.

“It ain't pretty, but . . .”

This hotel ain't real pretty on the outside, but for the price and location, it's pretty hard to beat. We stayed here for a week in July to attend a National Convention.

Yes, we could have stayed at one of the three "official" convention hotels, which had a negotiated "special" rate. But, for around half the total, we stayed as close to the Convention Centre as the closest "official" hotel and had included breakfast, WI-FI, coffee in the lobby, local phone calls and parking.

For our inclusive rate (less than $600 for 7 nts), we were comfortable, safe (security gates at each floor), fed in the morning and couldn't wish for better. Yes, there was some noise from a nearby nightclub with patrons leaving late at night, but with the air/con on, it was hardly noticeable.

Our room was #207, which was located next to the elevator, ice machine and drink machine, whic concerned us on checking in. But, not a sound or vibration from any of them.

We have to mention the location again. Not only is it one block from the Convention Centre, but one block from the Governor's Mansion, two blocks from the K Street Mall and just a few more to the State Capitol complex. There are also a good variety of eating places nearby.

Well worth considering this hotel whether on business or vacation. Do yourself a favour and save a few dollars.

“Value for the money in Downtown Sac”

I think they key to this Quality Inn is managing your expectations. It's not the most modern property, and it shows in many places. Some parts look shabby and old, including occasional aspects of the room finish. However, the location is hard to beat for the area.

The staff I encountered ranged from neutral to friendly. Free parking, breakfast and wi-fi can't be ignored. The beds were comfortable, the TV channels plentiful and the shower relatively powerful. The immediate area surrounding the hotel offers access to plenty of Downtown eateries and bars.

Yes - there are undoubtedly nicer hotels in Sacramento. There are newer ones also. However, if you're paying the quite reasonable prices that the Quality Inn is charging for the rooms, expect that not everything will be perfect and new, and you might find that the Quality Inn is a choice worth considering.
