“Nice enough, but a few surprises”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

We had an unpleasant surprise, though. We had rented a 2-bedroom suite for Christmas Eve so we could house extended family in the same spot for that family-oriented night. I knew the hotel had no elevators, but it turned out that all of the 2-bedroom suites were upstairs. That would not work for my disabled mother. I think this information needs to be highlighted in their hotel info.

The desk clerk was very friendly and helpful when we discovered the problem. She gave us 2 regular suites side-by-side and split the cost of each one so our total was the same. So we were close, but not together. Yes, it changed our plan for the evening, but I felt the clerk did what she could do to solve it.

This hotel is in a fine place if you want to be near restaurants and shopping. Probably a great place to stay for Cal Expo events. But somehow it just felt a little old and run-down despite the new carpets. Located on a major street with exterior entrances, it had the feeling of a city motel. The bed was super-soft and dipped toward center.

It was fine, but it was just a little disappointing to us. Since we couldn't get the 2-bedroom suite we'd wanted, I was sorry we hadn't chosen Larkspur Landing farther down the road, which has a cozier feel.

“Home Away from Home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

1We have stayed at this Marriott three times a year for the last 3 years. it is clean, the staff is very pleasant especially the staff that takes care of the breakfasts and snack-type dinners mon-thursday. They are friendly, welcoming and accommodating. Breakfast has enough choices so you can eat oatmeal, fresh fruit and yoghurt, or pig-out on the more greasy stuff that is on hot plates. The desk staff is always courteous and any reasonable request or issue is always resolved with a smile.

The studio rooms are very spacious and kept clean. There does tend to be a little language barrier when you need to divert from their normal daily cleaning schedule, when "please come back a little later", is understood to mean "we do not need cleaning today". It has happened a few times and it is a standing joke now between my husband and me.

Indeed, as mentioned by other reviewers, the rooms are outdated and carpets, mattresses, saggy chairs and sofa should be replaced. We liked the new plasma tv! What is mostly in need of attention is the kitchen. The toasters don't toast, there can be a shortage of pots and pans and other implements that you really need in order to cook some small, but decent meals.

Bathroom: the cabinetry is in need of replacement; tub and toilet are fine, but wish the exhaust fans weren't quite that noisy, they clank away!

Since we have stayed there both in the summer heat as well as during the Christmas holidays, we have used both the AC and heat, both are adequate although sometimes it is difficult to get it to the exact temp you want and the flow of the cold AC air when you sit in the living room area can too drafty.

Internet access is free and accessible, but can sometimes be painstakingly slow. Laundry facilities are excellent, kept very clean and desk staff always has quarters, soap etc. on hand for you.

Well we'll be back there in less than a week, we hope to have the same room (so far they've always come through with requests), and we know some of the "food staff" will give us a big smile and say: "welcome back!" and maybe sneak us one of their special yoghurt parfaits!

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs rooms, so you won't worry about earring the other shoe drop

“Gets the job done”

I stayed here while running CIM 2011 and it was a good choice. It's an older property but still well maintained. Very affordable room with breakfast included. Kitchen, free wifi, clean bathroom and bedding. It's on a very busy street, but you can walk to Red Lobster, Outback Steakhouse, Applebees and other local places to eat. Nordstrom Rack, Starbucks, McDonalds and Walgreens also within walking distance. Would consider staying here again for sure

“Time for an UPDATE!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

This hotel has very nice staff, and a generous breakfast. The exterior is well maintained and the walkways and gardens are quite pretty. There's shopping and dining nearby.

On the inside, the rooms need updating. The kitchens are dark and appliances are ancient. The cabinets need refacing, the carpet and bathroom flooring all needs to go. Beds are not the newer, high quality Residence Inn or Marriott matresses and as such, they're not terribly comfortable. The room sizes are large compared to more current Residence Inn standars, which is a plus, but the overall decor is very outdated making this a place I won't be interested in returning to until a renovation takes place. For the price, there are more contemporary options within a few miles.

Room Tip: Ask if there's a newly renovated room.

“Understated Elegance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

I had stayed in the Natomas Residence Inn and thoroughly enjoyed it; however, my expectations were somewhat dashed by the Cal Expo Residence Inn. It seems more antiquated and in need of expansion and modernization. The rooms were lovely and comfortable, but the social/reception area needs to be expanded--way too crowded. I did not get a sense of true assistance from the staff, either. Hopefully it was just my perception.

Room Tip: I am disabled. Please be advised that if you need a shower chair, you will get a regular room. I wa...
