“Expected more from a "Clarion".”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2010

My husband and I live about 50 miles from Sacramento. In the last year or so, we've discovered that it is a nice quick get-away and overnight stay. We love hanging out in Old Town and enjoy the proximity to a couple of Indian Casinos. We've booked rooms using a couple of the "blind booking" sites and this time we were booked into the Clarion Mansion Inn in downtown Sacramento. We were immediately underwhelmed beginning at check in. My husband was told that the room given to us did not have heat and for us to check out the room to see if it would work for us. It's normally VERY hot in Sacramento in August; however, it was unseasonably cold this weekend and the room was like a freezer. The walk to the room was unpleasant as the hotel lobby and halls smelled musty and old. We were given another room that was dubbed a "garden view" that overlooked the pool. As noted in other reviews, this really gave the hotel and Motel 6 sort of feel. The room itself felt clean. The carpet was worn and stained in some areas. As noted in other reviews, the shower was extremely small and the toilet area was narrow. The tv worked and besides basic cable, they offered HBO as well. The only problem was the volume control on the remote didn't work. Another negative was the outside noise the next morning as the cleaning crew pushed their carts down the walkway outside of the room. Also, we had to park at the Holiday Inn Express as there was no parking available closer to the Clarion in the shared parking lot.

Positive for the hotel was the location. It's located in a fairly neat area of Sacramento near the convention center.

“HGreat location for business trip, however...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

This hotel was a great location for my business trip. However, the restaurant and continental breakfast menu was very limited. The building is old and needs major renovation. The room was a non-smoking room but smelled like cigarette smoke and had a musty odor. The bathroom had a small shower only and the toilet that was adjacent to the shower is not accommodating to full size individual. Sitting on the toilet is like sitting in an airplane lavatory. Carpet was very dirty which is evident after taking a shower and walking around the room my feet became dirty. Housekeeping provided bare minimum service (i.e. Housekeeper did not mop floor in bathroom nor vacuum carpet without being asked). The bed was very uncomfortable with five pillows which is equivalent to one king size pillow (Had to go to Wal-Mart to purchase additional pillow). Parking was free; however, the parking spaces were very narrow which made it difficult to get out of the vehicle.

“Staff-two thumbs up; Room-two thumbs down :-(”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

Staff great, very pleasant. The rooms were very basic and generic looking. I had to close my door by slamming it! (1st clue). There weren't enough outlets so I had to unplug my alarm clock and ask for a wake-up call (I had to have a plug for my medical equipment) (second clue). I was called at the time I asked. The food was "OK". I guess I expected more being across from the Governor's mansion, (now a museum). I was making the best of it until I woke up the morning of my departure and saw a dead bug on the side of my mattress and I killed another one fleeing across the hotel phone on my bed stand------arrrhhhhh! (third clue). I am nearsighted without my glasses but I saw that bug so you know how close it was to me. The staff alone saved it from what would have deservedly been a terrible rating.

“Stay away.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2010

I travel to about 5 major cities every other month and I do not stay in high end hotels. I stay mostly in Holiday Inns, Holiday Inn Express, Best Westerns, etc. I state that so you will know my comparisons, nothing too fancy. This place is a dump. It is dirty, old, stains on tiles, paint chipping, wall paper separating at the seams, you name it. This hotel is very old, a motel style where each room opens toward the outside (Motel 6, Super 8 style). It smells. No renovation would suffice, this building needs to be razed and something else built.

“Cold Review”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2009

We arrived 10-26-09 for a 3 night stay. Check in was great. Asked for an upstairs room facing the courtyard not near an elevator or ice machines. Was sadly informed all rooms were near the ice machine. Had a good laugh. They asked if 2 double beds were ok and we said yes. Took elevator to our room. Interior hallways had a slight musty smell, but not too bad. Room had 2 double beds. Beds are confortable. Room and furnishings are in need of a makeover.Where's Oprah when you need her! Carpet had some stains. Room seemed clean. Opened sliding door to air out stuffy room. Then turned on AC to cool room down. It did not work. The fan didn't even go on. Called front desk and maintanence was there within 10 minutes. They found the problem in a remote electrical panel. Circuit breaker was tripped. Fan and AC now working. Next morning after a cool night went to turn on heat.No heat. Called front desk. Informed me they will let maintanence know. Asked for extra blankets just in case. Came back early afternoon. Room was still cold and the heater was still not working. Went down to front desk. Was told they have a 2 pipe system and they will switch over to heating side that evening. No blankets were sent to our room, so asked again. Blankets were sent up at that point. Came back to our room later that evening and still no heat. Next morning room is even colder now. Still no heat. Went out to breakfast and we stopped by the front desk to inquire about the status of any heat and was informed by front desk they had repair people onsite working on it. We finally got heat at 2pm this afternoon. I think what is so fustrating is they should have put some small portable heaters in the rooms in the interm. They did not have any idea as to how long it was going to take to repair the system. There has been no apology or any effort to comprnsate us for our discomfort. I also want to mention we got our room on Priceline. If it were not for that( being there are no refunds etc.) we would have left and gone to another hotel. I cannot reccommend this hotel.
One last observation. They have restrooms located downstairs from the lobby. I went in there to use the restroom and noticed an large access panel in the ceiling was open which exposed pipers etc. There was a distinct smell of mold and I could see the paint was peeling away from the ceiling from water damage and the ceiling was dark with mold. It was bad.
