“Good enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

This hotel was chosen for me by someone else. The location was great, and my room was very nice - nothing fancy, but the bed was comfortable and the room included a microwave, refrigerator and a coffee maker. The hotel does provide free Wi-Fi. It is really a shame that the bar/restaurant have closed. The continental breakfast in the morning wasn't too much. I would probably stay there again, but I don't know that I would necessarily recommend it to someone else.

“Terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

This hotel was booked via Hotwire.com. On their website it was listed as a 3 star 'A Smoke Free Hotel'. My room smelled of smoke, masked up with cleaning chemicals. There was a cigarette butt outside my patio. The room stank of smoke, chemicals, and of vomit. I completely opened the outside window to clear the smell, but it didn't help. Sacramento got down to very cold temperatures in the evening. The room heating system wouldn't work, so I had a choice of being cold with an open window, or coping with the smell and closed windows. Not only did the room stink, but it was infused in the bed linens and pillows. I got no sleep and by morning my eyes were red and swollen from the smoke and chemicals.
I mentioned this to the receptionist who said I could change rooms. The alternative room didn't have a screen door to the communal courtyard, and for security reasons (female, travelling alone) this wasn't acceptable. I bought a pillow to sleep on for the next night. I was also told that only air conditioning worked during the day, but at night the heat system would switch on. The cigarette butts remained outside my patio despite housekeeping cleaning my room. I kept the window open all day to clear the smell. In addition, the bathroom was mouldy and the hot water didn't work from the sink. The second night my room was freezing cold. The heating didn't work despite putting the setting onto full 'heat'. At night I called the front desk and they said an engineer could look at it the next morning. I had to pull the duvet off the other bed to add to my own. The next morning I now had a chest cold and cough.
I asked for the manager, and explained the cigarette smoking on my room patio. Her response was that they couldn't monitor it. (Later, speaking to other Sacramento hotels, I was told there was a £250 fine for smoking). I said that housekeeping hadn't even bothered to clear it away, and she said she couldn't chase them up all the time. And more on how it is an "old hotel", as if that has anything to do with me as a paying customer. Her solution was to vacate the hotel (and refund one of the 4 nights). I am from England, have never been to Sacramento, and had used Hotwire to be a booking agent for me. I only had their website information and confirmation that I booked and paid for a "3 star smoke free hotel"....and it was neither. The manager said that I should have "never booked with Hotwire" as they were notoriously incompetent. Hotwire (on hold with them, by the way for 4 hours) said it was the responsibility of the hotel, not them, and indeed didn't take responsibility that I did not get what they advertised, confirmed, and took money for. And my choice was to remain in these conditions or as a foreigner, begin a new hotel search.
The only good thing I can say about this hotel, is the receptionists/front desk workers, who were the only ones with any compassion, or offered help. I am grateful for their friendliness, but the rest of the experience was a total sham.

Room Tip: Do not book with Hotwire. Don't go to this hotel

“not a 3 star hotel”

Very disappointed. I booked this Clarion because I wanted to meet with colleagues in the hotel itself. Both the bar and restaurant are permanently shut down and there is no air conditioning in the meeting area and it was uncomfortably warm (this is Sacramento!!). I had to meet my colleagues elsewhere. There is no fitness room and the pool is not heated, but it is well maintained and there were plenty of towels. The exterior of the hotel is run down. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. I am a fairly heavy sleeper but was awoken several times during the night and early morning by people walking by my room. The room was in the courtyard and the people were not talking loudly. There was a very limited choice of TV channels, none premium, and many of the channels did not work properly. There was no fridge in the room, it is an option you have to ask for and they may not have one available. Homeless wander nearby begging, which in itself would not be too bothersome (city life!), but the reception did not pay any attention to who was entering the building or in the parking lot, which led me to understand why all the rooms had a security bar to prevent windows from being jammed open. It is *not* a 3-star hotel.

Room Tip: Light sleepers may want to take a room not in the courtyard where there is carpeting.

“Clean & fresh room in an aged building.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

I used Choice Hotel rewards for my stay at 10,000 points per night. Check-in / Check-out was fast and efficient.

My room on the 1st floor was poolside, near the lobby. The furnishings and bedding were clean and fresh. Mattress and pillows were perfect - not hard or mushy. Towels, tissue and bathroom amenities were well-stocked. The tv and a/c worked fine. The shower was clean with good water pressure and temperature control. [I was told the hotel has no rooms with bath tub / shower combos.]

I didn't have time to use the pool, but the area was clean and the water looked crystal clear.

The only noise I noticed was my upstairs neighbor's foot steps. Thankfully, that only lasted till 10pm.

Breakfast was fine for typical American hotel Continental - toast / bagels, muffins, pastries, cereals, bananas and yogurt. The woman working the dining area was friendly and kept everything stocked and tidy.

There is a Starbuck's one block southwest of the hotel, at 15th & H St, and many restaurants within a 4-5 block radius. As a solo female traveler, I never felt unsafe walking in the neighborhood during the day or early evening.

The only bad thing happened the morning I checked-out. As I was cleaning up to leave, I closed the glass shower door and next thing I knew the door was on me. It had fallen off its hinge and came to rest on the side of my head, leaning against my shoulder. Thank goodness I was standing close enough it didn't have any room to hit me hard, or fall & shatter on the floor.

Yes, this is an old hotel, but my room was clean, the staff nice and I felt safe. I would definitely consider staying again.

“Low Down on the Run Down Inn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

Everything was clean and the staff were not a problem but the place is beginning to get run down. Our television was spotty at best, some channels all white or all black, and some not working at all. The volume was also all over the place and the remote only worked in one direction. $371 for 4 nights (Mon - Fri)

I did like that there was plenty of hot water and at a decent pressure. I would have preferred a fridge and microwave in the room but there was not one. Only some rooms have them?

We were within walking of PF Changs, and Sandra Dee's BBQ and both were excellent. I wish I could have saved the leftovers.
