“A bit dirty, but comfy beds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2007

The manager was kind of a jerk when we asked if it was possible for an early check-in. Other than that, the staff was nice. I was surprised at how quiet the place was after reading other reviews on TripAdvisor. The bed was really great, so I told the front desk when I checked out. They told me that it was a new bedding package they recently added. I like the hotel's location because it's near a lot of gay clubs, coffee shops, restaurants, and mid-town sites. The hotel itself was a bit dirty, but nothing terrible. There was mold in the shower.

“Shading toward seedy in the room, but free parking”

After reading some of the less recent reviews, I felt a little uneasy about this hotel. If I had paid full price, I would not be happy, but I got a deal, and probably got what I paid for, This hotel is in downtown Sacramento, which itself can seem a little shady at night. I thought of Nancy Reagan refusing to live at the Governor's Mansion ( just across the street from this hotel) and I thought , well it is not as bad as all that, but I kind of saw her point. ! However, I did ask for a rod to jam the sliding glass door. The public rooms were fine, but my room was not so fine - dirty upholstery, and carpet looked seedy. But beds were okay, bathroom was fine and staff friendly. Needs sprucing up, or alternatively can slide downhill. Oh and air conditioning did not work.

“Uneventful is a good thing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2007

Uneventful is the best way to describe this place, which a good thing for a business traveler.

The room may not have fancy fixtures or expensive furniture like other more expensive places, but what it has works fine and the room's clean.

The central AC blower turns on and off on high speed which may be a nuisance to some. If it was constant it wouldn't be as much an attention getter. I turned up the temperature so it would only operate on the contant slow speed which was inaudible.

Yes, there's a night club across the back of the hotel and it is LOUD from the Holiday Inn parking lot (the 2 motels share part of th parking lot and look like they have the same owners). This was on Saturday night when I was there. However, I didn't hear anything once I got inside my room. The walls are soundproof! I stayed in a room that was near the center of the hotel.

Anyways, i had a good night's sleep and checkout time is noon!

“These folks are on the ball !!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2007

I too read the some of the previous reviews and was a little worried about my stay, but I was blown away with how eager the staff was to please. When I came to check in, I stated my name and the woman at the desk looked at me and said "Mr Anderson, we've been expecting you"......whow what a nice greeeting. The hotel was old but we never had a better night sleep. They have these incredible pillow top mattresses and very nice bed linens, I'm told they just recently added these. I needed extra towels and within minutes of my request, someone was at my door. I couldn't believe the level of service for the price I paid.
I'll be back!!

“Has obviously improved.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2007

I read the bad reviews of this hotel only after my fiancee had already booked it. We were extremely concerned, since a lot of the complaints were about the lack of air conditioning, and we were staying in Sacramento in the dead of summer.

Once I arrived, the only thing I could think was that either the hotel had gone through a major refurbishment in the last few months, or those previous reviewers were just high, and mistakenly stayed at a flebag motel nearby, thinking it was this one.

This hotel bears no resemblance to the one complained about in earlier reviews. The common area is gorgeous, with a lovely skylight and ample space. The only trace I could find of the earlier complaints is that the hotel has not yet upgraded the facade of the rooms. The hotel was obviously built in the 60's, and has the old combination latch-"do-not-disturb" sign that I remember from when I was a kid. These original doors are still there, but have been retrofitted with new card locks. The effect is that the paint around the door frame is a bit aged, but from the immaculate, perfectly earth-toned feel of the remaining 99% of the room, it's obvious the doors are next in line for replacement. If this was the root of previous complaints, then this is the nit-pickiest of nit-picking.

If I were to nit-pick, I would mention that this hotel actually provided me with enough sugar for my morning coffee. Most hotels skimp on that.

The staff was extremely helpful and courteous, and our stay was as uneventful as could be.

Of particular note was the air conditioning. Again, I have no clue where previous gripers have stayed, but the AC in our room was state-of-the-art, with a single thermostat that we controlled (some earlier reviews claim that they were controlled from the front desk).

Coincidentally enough, I spent the previous weekend staying at a Holiday Inn from the same era where they were less successful in upgrading (the carpeting and bed frame were obviously old), yet both that hotel and this one are rated three stars. This one certainly deserves that star rating much, much more.

Bottom line: Ignore previously bad reviews. The owners have obviously listened, and this hotel is a clean, decent place to spend time in a vibrant downtown area for a reasonable price.

  • Liked — The courtesy of the staff.
  • Disliked — Refurbishment still not quite finished.
