“A Disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2009

My husband was born and reared in Sacramento, so we visit there quite often. For many years we have been curious about the Vizcaya Inn and finally stayed there for 2 nights. We entered the big, beautiful house, filled out our registration paperwork, and then were asked if we would like to be told how to get to our room or would we like to be shown. We chose to be shown. So, the man exited the beautiful house and we followed him to the back of the house, to a beautiful courtyard/patio. He pointed to a building behind the large house and said which room we would be in. I asked if he was pointing to the top right and he was. The website for Vizcaya does not mention the carriage house behind the mansion. If I had known there was a possibility of being out there that would have helped to lessen the disappointment. It was quiet, even at night when there was a party in the Pavilion, which is part of the Vizcaya property.
Our room was nicely painted and decorated, the only antiques being light fixtures and a table in the bathroom. The carpet was horrendous. It was filthy and stained. The next day we were gone from about 10:00 in the morning until 3:00 or 3:30 in the afternoon. We came back to an uncleaned room. We had to call for clean towels, etc.
Parking was not adequate, although its location downtown makes it somewhat understandable. However, employees and repair trucks are allowed to park in the guest parking lot which consists of 6 spaces total.
When we tried to check out on Saturday morning there was one man serving breakfast and checking people out. It took a while before he was able to take a break from serving two tables to process our paperwork. He came out from the back and told us our company would send us a receipt. I asked him what he meant by "our company." He thought we'd booked through hotels.com, but I told him we'd booked through Vizcaya's website. He was gone to the back again for a while and then brought us a receipt.
Bottom line, the cash cow for the Vizcaya is clearly having weddings. We travel a lot and this bed and breakfast inn would not do very well if being an inn were its only means of income.

“Charming and A Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2009

I read the reviews, some very negative saying dirty, smells, etc., but many saying charming and attractive, so I had a little trepidation. But I and a colleague needed a night's lodging for a business conference, and the brand name hotels were over $200/room/night, so I took a chance and booked us two rooms at Vizcaya. I was pleasantly surprised. The place was very charming and was not dirty or smelly. It is a nicely kept old house, so if you have a Best Western mentality, this is not for you. But I have traveled extensively around the world, and many lodgings that were originally constructed as something else have funky elements to them, but that is part of the interest. This place was totally comfortable, sufficiently quiet, and the breakfast was attractive and good. One reviewer said it is not for business travelers, but I disagree. I assume a business traveler has a cell phone and some means of e-mail access, so other than that all that is needed is a place where you can get a good night's sleep, and this fit the bill, and at a price that could not be beaten.

“Will not be back...”

I feel badly, but must agree with others that this inn really needs some TLC. The carpet in my room was worn and stained and the shower had pockets of mold - ugh. In general, I like places with some history, charm, and character, but this was not it. The common room was also not inviting or comfortable -- four chairs surrounding a coffee table -- so between my room and the common area, there wasn't much to choose from.

“Great for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2008

Great place to stay...was nice and quaint....staff was helpful and pleasant....breaksfast was great and room service was helpful....other guests were not considerate....they were loud and rude.....no consideration for guests sleeping after 5:30 a.m. They drug their suitcase down the stairs, slammed door and let alarm ring for 10 minutes at 4:45 a.m. Would stay again....

  • Liked — the older victorian home with the old time feel
  • Disliked — the other guests inconsideration

“Caution-for Weddings”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2008

We had our wedding at the Vizcaya in 2007 and the customer service was very poor, downright unprofessional. The hotel coordinator arrived one hr. before the start of the ceremony (2 hrs later than promised), leaving our friends and families to set up the details she was supposed to attend to. The staff knew all along that the coordinator would be late, but never bother to tell our party about the 2 hr delay. She also did not have the correct agenda, so most everything was off. She asked me many questions about timing, when I had other things on my mind, bypassing my point person.

We booked this place because the grounds are pretty, but once they have your money, they don't care about anything else. Guests don't know the behind the scenes drama, but it's lousy to have to host.
