“It's a dump!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2005

We stayed here on our wedding night. What a dump! The furniture was dirty (white/stained brown) chairs in room, dirty bathroom, and lousy service. The room was advertised with a fireplace. We called the concierge for some firewood and they said "Why do you need firewood? It's summertime!" No firewood was available. So, it was certainly a memorable night. Oh, and the breakfast consisted of fresh and canned fruit and stale pastries!

“What a Disaster”

This place is a dump. I recently attended a wedding & stayed in one of their rooms at the Vizcaya. The whole thing was a disaster. The wedding plans got completely messed up, they lost the bride and grooms alcohol (which she provided for the reception) and botched the dinner service, Staff was no where to be found the entire night, her family and friends spent the night trying to patch up mistakes and track down Vizcaya staff, Now they are refusing to refund her any money. The rooms are nasty. The whole place smells like mildew, the rooms are funky and old, water stains on the showers and bathtubs, old mattresses and stained, holey linen. They advertise this place as 4 star, ha ha, what a joke. I wouldn't give this place 1/2 a star. Whoever owns this place should be embarrased. No wonder they are selling it.

“Not bad, but not as described”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2004

The Vizcaya is a very nice bed and breakfast, but did not live up to the billing it got in some of the travel guide reviews.

The inn is located in a beautiful old house that has been reasonably well-restored and maintained. High ceilings, stained glass windows, etc. A little peeling paint on the front steps, and some of the restoration isn't perfect, but it's still a very nice place.

What it isn't is quiet. A person coming up the stairs can be heard throughout the house, and it's pretty easy to make out conversations in the room next to yours. The HVAC comes on sporadically, and sounds like a storm rolling in. Couple these things with the fact that the house sits in a fairly urban environment, and doesn't have dual-pane windows, and you're in for a pretty noisy night. It wasn't too bad, but it also isn't the quiet and restful environment described in the travel guides.

As for the "gourmet breakfast," well... There was a table with few muffins that appear to have come from Costco, some cereal and milk, and (reasonably good) coffee and OJ. The "full" part of the breakfast consisted of eggs (scrambled only) and either toast or a bagel (again, apparently from Costco, and the bagel was so stale as to be inedible). Breakfast, yes, but gourmet--I don't think so.

All said, I'd stay here again, but anybody who's planning to do so should understand that the information available about the place tends to run to hyperbole.

“What a Find!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2004

I had to take a trip to Sacramento on very short notice - booked Vizcaya via Orbitz with NO knowledge of the place. What a find!!

I wound up with the penthouse suite, as they were otherwise fully occupied, but very determined to honor my reservation. Penthouse suite turns out to be the ENTIRE third floor, essentially 3 rooms, with a large conference talble, 6 upholstered chairs, two large sofas, marble tiled bathroom with a jacuzzi big enough for 4 people, large television, 2 queen beds, antique furnishings, VERY ample closet space, bathrobes, a private balcony, and phone.

Oh yeah, the price I paid? $49.00 (special rate, don't expect to see this again - even Vizcaya's staff were astonished when they saw what I was paying!). By the way, that rate included a wonderful breakfast too!

“Going Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2003

It was like coming home, after one of those nightmarish travel adventures all businessmen (and women) have endured at one time or another.Weary travelers like myself rarely if ever come across a place they can hang their hat for the night or week that feels like home. Yes, there are those extended stays and other "home style" hotels, but nothing like the feeling you get of being home.I say that just so you know the experiences I've had at the Vizcaya Bed & Breakfast in Sacramento, CA come after staying in virtually every type of alternative and traditional accommodations in the area. The mansion itself dates back to a time when quality craftsmanship was prevalent. You stand there and are in awe of the skill it took to build, and the outward appearances and amenities offer a pleasant view for your eyes. The staff is friendly and most importantly welcomes you at the front door. This is the beginning of their hospitality and accommodating spirit. There are only 4 rooms in the main house, so your not made to feel like one of the sheep like at a hotel. There are guest quarters in the carriage house behind the main building and across the beautiful brick garden/patio area. The sound of the fountain begins to evaporate the stress already. You enter the room and are pleasantly welcomed by the feeling of home. The room is furnished with antiques from the period and center stage is the bed. The reason you find accommodations.A place to lay your head at night and re-energize yourself for the next grueling day. In the bathroom, you spot the Jacuzzi tube, the glass enclosed shower stall and know that this is not a hotel, but a home. Your home away from home and that night you sleep on that wonderful bed, awake and look around and wonder if you had clicked your heels together 3 times teat night, and whispered in your sleep Theres no place like home, theres no place like home, theres no place like home. And you fully expect a familiar face will be calling you down for breakfast, or a staff member there reminds you of someone from your dream the night before. You know youll be back
