“surprised, but not in a good way”

My wife and I stayed here last weekend in Carriage House 1 since the mansion is undergoing heavy-duty renovation. Be prepared to park on the street. There was no front desk, and you have to guess at which building is where the front desk should be. The staff are very nice, but management is clearly absent. No continental breakfast, instead they offered us "breakfast in bed" with our choice of quiche or quiche served at 8 AM. We are early risers, no coffee maker in room, so only tried this once and found out that it's not easy for two people to juggle what normally goes on a table. No table and only 1 rickety chair in the room, by the way. Room smelled slightly like mildew and had 2 or 3 ants on the sink at night - not unlivable, but not ideal. A generator or heating/AC unit placed next to our room kept us up for hours both nights, then a wedding party finishing up noisily kept us up for a little while more. My advice is to call ahead to find out if it's being renovated and look around the room before signing. Aside from all that, it's in a quiet location that could potentially be a nice romantic getaway if they fix these issues.

Room Tip: Try to get a room as high up and as far away from service noise, wedding noise, and AC/heater noise...

“You get what you pay for.”

My husband and I decided to stay at the Vizcaya after staying in other crappy motels in Sacramento for around the same price. Why not stay in a mansion instead? The mansion is a bit outdated, but I was expecting that. Anybody complaining about it being old shouldn't be there in the first place. I enjoy historic places. I did not find it dirty as other reviewers have said.. actually I found it to be very clean! The light pink carpet was stained, but not dirty.
Two major complaints were this: I rented a room with a giant soaking tub because I wanted to use it. However, the hot water heater is not big enough to fill the tub with hot water. So, the tub was filled with luke-warm water, too cool to bathe in comfortably. And the hot water tank was empty, so my husband and I ended up taking cold showers. Not fun. The room should not advertise that it has a soaking tub, because in reality it does not have a usable one. My other complaint was, they were sprucing the paint up a bit by varnishing the wood floors and painting the walls. The odors were very strong and I woke up each morning with a headache. It seems that they should not have rented the house out in that condition.

If it wasn't for those two complaints, I would probably give the house five stars due to the price, location, and quiet. It is a much nicer place to stay than motels in that price range. I can't say if I will stay there again, but I just might. If I do stay in there again, I will stay on the very top floor because it was a pretty cool looking room (it was open when we were there and we had a peek).

Room Tip: Do not get the room with the soaking tub if you expect to use the tub. That room is also directly o...

“Well taken care of”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

We occupied several rooms at Vizcaya Mansion for business and it was a very pleasant experience. There are issues, lack of parking is unfortunate and it would be nice to have an elevator since we're usually loaded down with trade show stuff in addition to our personal items. All in all though, Dennis took very nice care to make sure that we were comfortable and to explain the idiosyncratic nature of the old house. The breakfast was very nice- the scones were still warm and very welcome with the expanded continental breakfast. There were several weddings going on during our stay but I never heard a sound from the event or even guests as they left.

“Outdated and overpriced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

Stayed for 3 nights for a wedding that was at this location. The wedding facilities and grounds were good and well kept. However, the mansion was VERY outdated, poorly maintained and managed. The carpet is old and dirty. THere is paint chipping on the inside and outside of rooms and bulidings. THere is wood rot around the buliding. Sharing a thermostat (which is in the hallway) for two rooms is rediculous. The maid service was not up to par and had to ask many times for simple room conviences. No clothes storage, mold in the shower, light under wide crack in door and lack of sound proofing. Could have great potential if remodeled. THe reception facility could also use updating in their carpet and other items. All could use a 20 year facelift!
Would not recommend for anyone to stay there.

“It worked for me!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2010

I researched sacramento for my hubby and my 25th anniversary. We love old town sacramento so we took Amtrak and used public transportation for four days and three nights. We stayed at the Vizcaya. While they do need to replace carpet, the rest of our stay was so cool! I love old houses so I enjoyed the atmosphere. The pavillion is pretty even in winter. Since it is 'off' season for weddings we got a great price. Breakfast was good and so was the coffee. The light rail stops at 16th or 23rd street, which invovles quite a walk. 23rd street stop worried me, I'm not used to a big city, so we used the 16th street stop and walked the six or seven blocks. It was a wonderful, restful, and fun time thanks to Vizcaya.
