“Not a bad stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

I was in this hotel for one night as a final night of a recent trip to the Los Angeles area. This was a priceline stay, so I knew nothing about the hotel prior to my visit. First the good. The hotel is in a really beautiful location, and also quite convenient to local beaches and other attractions. The staff were also quite friendly and helpful, and the room was clean and comfortable. There were a few negatives, however. There is one price for parking, if you happen to have a car, if you chose valet or to self park. While not outragious, it seemed a bit pricey for self parking, outside, uncovered. Not all rooms come with a nice view as you are led to believe from the hotel's website. You may have a lovely view of the neighboring restaurant, along with the noise. However, the other views are indeed quite nice. Also, the hotel has made attempts at going "green" in many areas including motion activated light sensors, etc. In addition, the shampoo, soap, etc. are all in bottles that are shared between guests. If you bring your own, it's no issue either way. But this may bother some guests. Finally, this may have just been an issue with my room, but the AC until was not functional. In the evening it made no difference because I just opened the sliding patio door -- but with the curtain pulled (remember, restaurant view!) But, it got quite warm in the daytime, so definitely would have been a problem in the summer.

Otherwise, the rooms were clean and nice, though certainly not what I expected from this class of hotel. So would I stay again? Hmm. If I used priceline or some other discount source and paid a low rate probably so. If I had to pay the hotel's published rates, most likely not. In my opinion, it's probably not worth the money if you pay full price. The water view rooms can cost you as much as $300/night or more. There are a few nicer places in the area for the same or lower published price that I would consider first.

Room Tip: If you are willing to pay the premium, go for an upper floor with water view.

“Lovely getaway in Redondo Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Travelzoo offered the Hotel Portofino at a discount on my husband's birthday. We arrived on Saturday night around sunset and were delighted, not only by the lovely marina surroundings, but by the beautiful hotel. Walking in, we felt as if we'd been transported to Maui but the decor is more Nantucket. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The room was the perfect combination of lush and cozy, complete with every appointment one could wish for. The marble-tiled bathroom was large and comfortable.
The real bonus is the Baleen restaurant. We enjoyed an exceptional dinner. The menu provides a lovely selection of items that are beyond the usual and up to the standards of any "foodie." We liked Baleen so much that we had Sunday brunch there -- also excellent.
We checked out on time but spent the afternoon hanging out, reading, relaxing and sipping lemonade, in a sunlit lobby, overlooking the marina. The Hotel Portofino is a great place for a weekend getaway.

Room Tip: The marina view is better on the upper floors.

We got a coupon through TRAVEL ZOO so we decided to try it...We are local but wanted a little romantic get away..It was perfect! we arrived early(not expecting our room to be ready..we were planning on using their Cruisers and go for a bike ride along the beach)....Our room WAS ready AND they upgraded us to the oceanside of the hotel. The Staff was wonderful, kind and professional...We felt very comfortable there. The restaurant(spendy) but worth it..great atmosphere and knowladgeable staff.
We had Breakfast in our room and it took only 15 min for them to get it to us..The food was great..Our experience there was great and will go there again

Room Tip: Oceansided is great...Beautiful sunsets and Sea Lions to watch!

“We enjoyed our stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

The hotel was beautiful and had a friendly staff. Our room was comfortable and the staff was helpful and pleasant.

We were disappointed with the bar service. We wanted to have drinks Saturday night and there were many empty, dirty tables. And the bartender was swamped and mostly unavailable. We sat around for about 20 minutes and when I went to the front desk to ask for service, she curtly told me to go to the restaurant bar and bring my drinks back to the living room area ... rude. We enjoyed our evening off grounds.

The rest of the staff was extremely friendly, and overall our stay at the hotel and our dining experience at the restaurant was excellent.

“Stolen Shoes”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

My husbands pair of $120 Chacos were stolen while we stayed there. The hotel management claims that it must've been the next guest in the room.... Seriously..
Also, we tried to order a bottle of wine at the bar, 20 minutes later the bartender returns with no wine, says the menu we looked at must not be up to date, so he gave us another menu, another 20 minutes later (he had to go down to cellar, which must have been in Santa Monica) and comes back with no bottle again. He said they were out of that one. The rooms were ok. Dated.. Not what I would consider 4 star by any standards. We were really not happy about the shoes...
