“Needs some work”

The hotel is located on a cliff overlooking the beach. The views from the front of the hotel are great. However, the rooms are another story. Evidently this property underwent a remodel some time ago and its age is showing. The beds were not very supportive and the furniture in the room was not functional. The bathroom was very small. We requested a room with a fireplace and they gave us one next to some type of maintenance closet for the hotel. At 7:50 AM each morning they started up a machine that was very loud and could be heard quite distinctly in our room. This is inappropriate for a hotel that bills itself as an upper-end resort and charges accordingly. The other facilities in the hotel were just average. The exercise room was clean but a couple of the machines were broken. The pool was nice, as was the spa. The spa facilities were minimal but the massages we got were very good. We had breakfast at the restaurant and sat on the patio with a very nice view of the ocean. The breakfast buffet was fine and reasonably priced. There appeared to be other nice looking properties in the area so it may pay to look around a bit if you are going to Pismo.

Room Tip: Avoid the west end of the building.

I appreciate your feedback on your stay last month. Unfortunately, we did have an equipment malfunction in January that created a noise on the top floor of the building, which we were able to remedy as soon as we heard about the problem. I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to make amends during your stay!

We have however removed the older equipment in the gym and are waiting for delivery of some new pieces. We do continue our program of purchasing mattresses monthly, and if you can get in touch with us to let us know the room number you stayed in, I would love to prioritize it as a replacement. It always helps to hear from our customers so we can keep improving!

“Cliffs is Nice, but getting dated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I only stayed one night at the Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach, but it was my second time staying there. While it has an unbeatable location with gorgeous views (but not from my room), it is getting a bit dated.

When I checked in, my key card didn't work on the door to my room. There was no phone available in the hall, so I lugged my bags down to the front desk to wait in line again. They gave me another key card, which only worked the fifth time I slid it into the lock. I soon discovered that the door locks are only one of the things that are in need of replacing.

My room faced the parking lot and highway 101. I tried to sleep with the patio door open, but the noise from the freeway was too loud. There are plenty of ocean-view and partial ocean-view rooms available, however. The patios are very small, but each room has one.

The decor of the room is a bit '90's. Everything screamed out for an update, such as the wallpaper and the linens. The bathroom with the tub/shower combo could also use a refresh. The bed wasn't very comfortable, and it felt like it is just in need of a replacement.

Rooms aside, the grounds of the resort are lush and beautiful. We watched a gorgeous sunset from the outdoor lounge, and felt like we were in paradise. It was too cold to use the pool, but it looked lovely. There is a nice path along the cliff to walk along, and another leading to the stairs down to the beach.

At checkout, I was surprised with a pesky "resort fee". I assume the resort fee was for use of the the pool, etc. Weren't amenities included in the price of the room at one time? I felt ripped off, especially since the room was not inexpensive for what it was.

Pismo is a beautiful place to visit. I only wish the Cliffs would renovate their rooms and at least be upfront about the bogus resort fee.

Room Tip: Don't get a room facing Highway 101! It is very loud.

I am so sorry to hear you were so disappointed in the resort! We really have tried our best through the years to keep the building up to date, from décor to facilities. Even when we do have to replace door locks, as periodically happens, our staff is trained to look for the signs that indicate it may be failing (blinking lights, difficulty with keys) and I am sorry we couldn’t have prevented your difficult check in.

We also try to be proactive and let our guests know about the facilities fee at the time of reservation. If we aren’t clear enough during the reservations call, the confirmation email or letter we send out details all the amenities the fee allows us to provide for our guests (pool and Jacuzzi, as you mentioned, along with wireless internet and valet services). We also try to point it out at check in, when each guest initials by their daily rate, to be clear that it is separate from the room rate but included in each guests’ stay.

We are constantly working to update the facilities, from furniture and linens remodeled two years ago to this year’s focus on the comfort and décor in the suites. We have long term plans for redoing the wallpaper in the hallways and perhaps the bathrooms could be a project for the future. I appreciate all the feedback we receive, and it helps us plan out the development of the hotel!

“designed for travelers with dogs!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We've been here three times in the past two years. This hotel has so much to offer!
1. spectacular ocean view and sunsets
2. helpful friendly staff
3. really nice rooms
4. heated pool, swimmable in December/January
5. great breakfast
6. 3.5 hours from LA
The pet friendly rooms are tiled, which means no pet odor or fleas. Lawn is literally a few feet away from your glass door. The best part is the dog beach and all the other dog lovers at the hotel. We really enjoy the Cliffs and will be regular visitors!

“Would definitely go back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Location, location, location! That's what makes this place. The parking lot fills up as it appears they have business meetings there. Plus, I saw people changing into wetsuits for surfing in the parking lot. They should do a better job policing that so the people staying there can get a spot. Room was fine and view was incredible. Pool area was nice and pool was heated but we didn't have time to use it. Nice restaurant (marisol)/bar next door. Staff was nice and helpful in providing directions and restaurant recommendations in San Luis Obispo and in Pismo Beach. About a 10 minute drive to San Luis Obispo.

Room Tip: You definitely want an ocean view room here.

Thank you for your kind review! As lucky as we are to be in such a beautiful spot over the beach, I know the parking lots near us do fill up quickly. Actually, the spots in front of the hotel have been designated by the city as public beach access. So to make parking easier for our hotel guests, we provide valet parking – each person reserved at The Cliffs pays a little extra in form of our facilities fee, and this guarantees in and out valet service throughout the stay. This also covers the pool you mentioned, in addition to fitness center access and wireless internet. We certainly look forward to having you back again so you can take advantage of every one of the amenities we provide for our guests!

“Very nice rooms!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Stayed here in December for a holiday event and had a great experience. However the room we stayed in had a fireplace for heat. We followed the directions verbatim for using the fireplace but still could not get it to work. Luckily it wasn't that cold the first night. We got it to work during the day but had no use for it so we turned it off and could not get it to work for the second night. Probably should have called front desk and had them deal with it but we didn't bother with it. Other than that the room was beautiful and very comfortable. Bathroom was super clean and the bathrobes were amazing! I want one for home use. We will stay here again!!

How great to hear you had a good time during your holiday event! I’m sorry we didn’t get up to the room to take a look at the fireplace – there’s a bit of a trick to the thermostat that controls it, but it’s usually an easy fix. I’ve applied labels on the controls, so hopefully the next time you stay you can enjoy the warmth uninterrupted. As a caution, the gas shuts off when it gets too hot, so we’ve seen the most success when the temperature is set under 85 degrees – they can stay on and stay safe. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the rooms otherwise, though, and we hope to see you again next December, if not earlier!
