We were driving up the coast from LA to San Fran and had a few days with no fixed plan of where we would stay. When we arrived in Pismo it was so beautiful we decided to stop over there, and drove around to about 6 hotels asking their vacancies and costs. The Tides was the cheapest we found, at $96 including tax (the next cheapest was $130 + tax). The room was clean, spacious enough, had it's own bathroom, tv, coffee maker and two very comfy old rocking chairs. It even had a seaview, albeit a little blocked by the house next door. The access to the beach is fantastic as you are literally 2 minutes walk down the path to the beach. You can wander all the way down to the pier where all the restaurants and shops are which takes about 10-15 minutes. The decor is old fashioned and homey, and the general vibe of the place is low key and unpretentious. We enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night (and actually wished we'd stayed a third as the next place we went to had bed bugs!).
