“Nice resort, nice weekend with young children”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

My husband, three small children, and I stayed here for two nights in December as a quick weekend getaway.

The staff was very welcoming and nobody looked at us askance even when our kids were noisy. But, we did feel like odd ducks being here with our three kids. We didn't see any other young children the entire weekend.

The rooms (we had two connecting rooms) were nice; a bit generic, but certainly comfortable and clean. The restaurants were fine. Room service was very fast. Starbucks in the lobby was a huge plus. We also enjoyed the Saturday night buffet dinner with prime rib, crab legs, and a ridiculously large dessert buffet.

The pools looked fun, but some of them were closed for repair, and in any case it was too cold and windy to go swimming. I will say, also, that it would be a LONG WALK from the hotel room to get to a pool, and you'd have to parade through all the main hotel areas. I hate that kind of thing--who wants to walk through a big lobby and big outdoor area in your swimsuit, lugging your kids and gear?

The resort includes a human-made lake, and you can take a free boat ride around on it. Obviously my kids loved that.

Was it an easy, relaxing weekend? Yes. Was there a lot to do with young kids? No. If we could have gone swimming, it would have been more entertaining. But for an off-season weekend, we probably would not choose this place again.

Room Tip: For families, two connecting king rooms works great.

“Wolrld Class Quality and Prices”

My wife is attending a Tony Robbins semiar here and I joined her for two nights. This Marriott must have one of the best atriums this side of Los Vegas, beautiful, amazing, unique. It has acres of water and some of that water comes right in to the hotel, you can even take a skippered boat to dinner. The front desk person was very friendly and the room service people very professional and efficient. The common areas are amazing works of decorating and architecture. Only two concerns; our room was not spectacular and bar and dining costs are even more amazing than the lobby. Make sure you have a big credit card limit and you'll love living like 1%.

“Contained Luxury”

I love this resort. It can get a trifle crowded on weekends, with some convention or the other. The staff are mostly young, a bit brash, but very helpful. It is obvious that you are expected to tip extravagantly. The golf course itself is worth it, with its beautiful landscaping, and its very popular. The views in any direction are simply breathtaking. There's plenty of dining variety in the resort itself, the food is fabulous. I certainly recommend dressing up for dinner. And the Costas Night Club is The Place if you are looking for a fun evening dancing. Dress high end to blend in.

The Spa I left for the last : Its expensive if you are on a budget, but its the ultimate out of this world in pampering and who doesnt need that? I would highly recommend the spa vacation package.

“Very nice place to stay!”

We arrived at night after a long trip from the east coast. Check in was easy. They put us in the newly renovated part of the hotel. The view from the room is of the mountains. Very nice. We ate lunch at the river view terrace. Good food but expensive. Would come back here if ever back in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for the newly renovated area.

“Could Be So Much More”

I spend about 70 nights a year in hotel rooms and typically stay at Marriott, JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton properties. I will start by saying that there are many positive attributes to this property. The grounds of this particular resort are absolutely gorgeous. The landscaping is meticulously maintained, the surroundings are extraordinarily lush and the mountain views are beautiful. The hotel itself is in need of renovations that appear to be underway. The windows throughout the facility have begun to fog (probably from moisture between the panes). During this particular visit, I stayed in a renovated wing of the resort that was not quite to JW standards. Don't get me wrong this is still a nice facility, it just does not have the polish that I expect from a JW Resort. It was apparent that an old room had been updated rather than fully renovated. Old sliding glass doors, popcorn ceiling and brass and nickel bath fixtures show the age of the property.

During this stay I was vacationing with my family and needed two connecting rooms. I called the resort in advance of my arrival to ensure that the two rooms that I had reserved would be adjoining. I was told that would not be a problem. At check in there was a gentleman in front of me in the Elite line that was expressing extraordinary concern about a service failure. He made it clear that he was not pleased with the proposed remedy and stormed off. After he departed the Marriot clerk asked me to wait while he phoned someone (presumably his manager) to say I think we have a real problem. The clerk apologized for the wait and thanked me for my loyalty. He indicated that I had adjoining rooms overlooking the pools and mountains (best views). I treked what felt to be a 1/4 of a mile (an exaggeration but seriously it was a long walk) to my assigned rooms and learned that not only were they not adjoining but they were not even next door to one another. This was less than ideal since I was traveling with a 7 and 9 year old who could not stay in a room alone. I called down to the desk and shared that my rooms were not adjoining. A woman said snidely "I dont know who told you that they were". I indicated that i would appreciate her help finding a remedy. She said that the best that she could do was a room with a parking lot view in a section that had not been renovated. The resort seemed empty, so I inquired about occupancy rates and suggested that there might be more that she could do to find a room that was comparable to the room that I had been assigned. She noted that occupancy should not be a concern of mine and that this was absolutely the best that she could do. She said that if I did not act quickly she could not make any promises. The resort was an absolute ghost town. She could have done more to remedy the problem or at a minimum been nicer about it.

As I said I travel a lot and truly believe that Marriott routinely provides for a pleasant customer experience. This particular stay was an exception to the rule. If you can catch a good rate, this resort is worth a try but don't expect the polish of a newer resort.
