We were driving and exhausted, and arrived to an odd scene. A lady was working the front desk, and a man (her husband?) was behind a door, listening, and would pop out to take the phone from her when someone called down about tv problems.
He would fuss at the caller, and refuse to give credit/adjustments for tv problems.
I took the room anyhow. The lady told me "just" the cable was out - of course, that would mean there was regular tv. She said she had a queen bed, which was very important to us. She asked if I needed to see the bed - she told me I could. "I believe you," I said. I told her if she told me it was just the cable and the bed was a queen, I was choosing to believe her.
We rode the elevator up. The room was disgusting. The tv was completely nonworking. It was NOT the cable out - it was 100% of service, as it turned out that they were transitioning from cable to satellite and nothing. The queen that she promised was a disgusting little double.
In the time it took the old loud elevator to go up and then down, my husband was in the office returning the keys we wouldn't be needing. The man laughed and yelled at him, telling him that he already had swiped the card and had his money!! He repeatedly raised his voice at my husband!
I went in and got much more than that. I kindly returned the keys, as we had been lied to about the room, and I got screamed at! I could see the man again looming behind the cracked door, and he quickly jumped out again just as I expected. At first, they laughed and reminded me how they did tell me I could see the room first. However, I reminded them that I told them I was choosing to believe them with the room they were giving me - If they said just the cable was out, and they said I was getting a queen, I believed them. They laughed. Just like they said to my husband, they reminded me the card was swiped and that they "had" my money.
I told him I would write of this experience on TripAdvisor, and his temper completely EXPLODED! He absolutely blew up. I have never been yelled at like that in my life, much less by someone in the "hospitality" industry. I didn't know what to do! He would not stop with his yelling - it went on and on and on, screaming and screaming. He screamed that he had my money. He screamed that if I reviewed his hotel on TripAdvisor, he would come on here and write a review of me (what in the world does that mean?). He yelled and yelled, and not even the lady could get him to stop.
His temper is dangerous, and he doesn't need to be working around people. He scared me.
We will of course fight the charge, as the room was not the promised room - not at all. However, that takes time that we could devote to something else!
I would not stay there on principle alone.
Oh, and why would one need a tv if you're on a beautiful coast? I was wondering the same thing when the visitors were calling down. It's because there is absolutely nothing else to do if you are in one of the rooms - you NEED it to get your mind off the fact that you are in a stinky, dirty room! The walls were ugly, the wall hangings were uglier, the bathroom was nasty and old, and the carpet - it just stunk! I pushed my hand in the middle of the double mattress and it went straight down in the middle. I would not even feel comfortable putting my suitcase down. The bed that was *not* a queen had no comforter - just an old, old 'bedspread,' an old, tired sheet, and just two pillows that were flatter than pancakes!
We left because we had to - the room wasn't what they said - but when we got to a Marriott with a smiling host and a clean, soft bed - we were so happy!
I would advise avoiding this hotel and the man who runs it. Like I said, he scared me. A lot.
