“Excellent Value”

We stayed in a room with king size bed and fireplace. Room was very clean, bed comfortable. Breakfast choices were limited, but certainly adequate, e.g. bagels, instant oatmeal, yogurt, coffee, orange juice. Great location within easy walking distance of Point Pinos Lighthouse and Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course. It's a beautiful area. Our only complaint was that the outside porch light is on a sensor and stayed on all night, pouring more light into the room than we like. We could have solved that problem by getting out of bed and unscrewing the bulb, but we were too lazy. So you know it wasn't a big deal. We will come back!

“Wonderful get-away”

We took advantage of an off-season special to enjoy a long weekend on the coast: what a treat to find the Sunset Inn! The grounds and buildings are well-maintained and have had a wonderful "face-lift." It looks like the inn started life as an old cottage-style motel, and has been re-modeled into cute rooms with vaulted ceilings and enlarged bathrooms. Our room was spacious, clean, and relaxing.

Barbara, the hostess, was very gracious and helpful. At Barbara's recommendation, we tried An Choi for dinner. The restaurant is within in walking distance and the food was wonderful (great homemade peanut sauce!). Although the inn serves bagels, yogurt, and oatmeal for breakfast (which we did enjoy one morning), at Barbara's suggestion we tried Toasties - great eggs benedict and olallaberry waffle!

The inn isn't pretending to be something it isn't. It's just a nice, clean, well-maintained, comfortable place to rest...in a good location and with friendly, helpful management. We are already planning a return trip with a larger group of friends.

“a nice place with a great location”

WE were pleasantly surprised by our overall experience. The Inn is not large or new but it has been renovated and represents a great choice in the area. The location is very near the municipal golf course and Asilomar beach (walking distance).

“What a little gem!!!”

Great location, nicely decorated, very clean and Barbara the manager is wonderful! Have stayed in a King room w/fireplace and the King Suite with jet tub and kitchen and balcony. Beautiful view of sunset! Prefer regular room as we are older and getting in and out of the jetted tub was a little precarious. The regular rooms have wonderful step-in showers. Will definitley stay here again and recommend it to friends!

“Not a good choice”

Having travelled around California for 3 weeks over Christmas and New Years and having stayed in many hotels I can state clearly this was the worst one we stayed in. We moved out after just one night.

The rooms are OK but had peeling or chipped paint. The walls are thin. The identical units look from the outside just like pre-fab military housing. The units have no view other than each other across a driveway. Ther patios are part of the driveway.

The very worst part - which made us move out right away - was the breakfast. Every aspect of the breakfast was the worst we had in CA. They do not serve milk at breakfast so they have a completely chemical based "whitener" to make your coffee or tea look like it has milk in it. The cereal served had to have hot or cold water poured onto it as they do not offer any milk. Can you imagine cereal soaked in water - yuck! No fruit was offered. No decaffinated coffe was served.

So we moved just 100 yards down the road to the Lighthouse Suites and Lodge and had in every way a better stay. And the cost of the Lightouse room was actually $2 less than the Sunset.

Dear Guest,
Thank You for your response.
LIghthouse Lodge offers a full breakfast and/or dinner. However, their rate is generally higher but probably lower in this instance because they had finished termite fumigation on their property.
Also, we're not sure if you noticed but the lighthouse lodge rooms (at least the newer side) look into a cemetery.
Lastly, here in America it is common to use hot water to make oatmeal.
