We had been planning this trip for nearly a year - 3 weeks driving through California....we run a busy b&b in France & pride ourselves on offering a breakfast with a difference so consequently we tried to stay in places run along similar lines. No complaints about the property at all - it is as beautiful as previous reviewers have mentioned - a well restored Arts & Crafts house in a lovely setting within walking distance of the town with some great restaurants. The rooms are all stunning - we had Plover which was spotlessly clean with lovely linens - the room was cleaned & tiddied each day - one of the best b&b rooms we stayed in on the trip. However.......sadly the chef Jas quit the weekend of our stay. We benefitted from his appetisers the first evening which were excellent - as described by previous reviewers & we were promised that the new chef would be as good. The first morning we hoped to have his last breakfast, but needed an early start. Breakfast is not served till 9am, which was also late for another couple we met there who needed an early start. We weren't asking for a super early breakfast, but despite what they say on their website & the booking info no offer was made for an earlier breakfast for us. Hot water was available for tea & coffee & we had some left over cookies left for us. The second morning we descended for breakfast full of expectation for the new chef along with all the other guests - over 20 of us......... after a 30 minute wait the couple who shared our table (same couple who missed out on breakfast the previous morning) had to leave for a meeting - they were not happy about missing 2 breakfasts.... we stuck it out for another 15 mins - we shouldn't have bothered....one of the worst breakfast I have had ever in 40 years of travelling the world. 2 pieces of dried bacon on a spoonful of scrambled eggs, some chopped apples & an undercooked muffin - all on the same plate......no apology offered for being late. A toaster was available with a bag of sliced bread, but no plates. A bowl of average fruit was also available & the usual hot water for 'do it yourself tea & coffee' + the left over cookies. Sadly it sounds like the new chef has not worked out judging by the last review & I have to say the management do not appear to be organised. One tip for all b&b owners reading this, despite how beautiful the room & setting is, the last impression your guests have of you is breakfast - make it memorable or your business will collapse. The management here needs to be better organised, having 14 rooms accommodating up to 30 people, breakfast needs to be staggered - offering guests a breakfast at 8, 8.30 or 9 will also help the chef to be organised & ready to serve the hot dish within minutes of sitting down. In a country where service is too fast for us Europeans - we were rarely in a restaurant for more than an hour......to take 45 mins to serve a mediocre breakfast is inexcusable. Finally find a better chef - quickly......... The Inn is a beautiful place to stay, but it is not cheap, the reason we came is for the quality of service & we had looked forward to the breakfast throughout our trip. We stayed in another B&B during our trip where the room was not clean, but breakfast was amazing - we will return there definitely. Jas will be sorely missed........you have lots of competition nearby & I have to admit unless the reviews improve we will stay elsewhere the next time.
