My husband and I stayed here the first weekend in December. We had purchased a livingsocial deal for $225 for a two night stay, that included a surf and turf dinner and a bottle of wine. I would've liked to have stayed here sometime sooner and warmer (I bought the deal in April, but they were booked up all the way through December!!!).
Pros-Easy to find, easy drive to Pacific Grove, Monterey, 17-Mile Drive
-Free DVDs in the office to borrow, DVD player in room
-Clean room with a balcony (we stayed in the Congress Ave room)
-Good dinner! Our surf and turf was very tasty!
Cons-Our room was FREEZING. even with the electric "fireplace"/heater, we were cold. On our second night, we had to turn the heat lamp on in the bathroom and keep the bathroom door open to supplement the fireplace!!
-Room decor was mismatched. The lamps were decoupaged shades made by the previous owner (crafty and trendy) but the rest of the furniture was country style, or mismatched, as if they were recent college grads just starting out.
-No one is there at night. If you didn't make it to check in on time, they just tape an envelope with your key to the door of the office. I had called to tell them that we might be late checking in, I was assured that there is "no crime" and that my key will be available. I'm sure that this is true, but it is a dark property, way off of a well traveled road. If crime were to happen, there is great opportunity.
-The dinner was good, but it was also kind of awkward. There are 3 tables in the office area, all of which were occupied when we were eating. The cook/office staff comes in and out. There's no real flow to the meal. We weren't sure if we should expect dessert, or if we had to tip. It was odd. (For those interested, there is no dessert, and we didn't tip.)
-Breakfast was awkward too. There were sausages and pancakes, bagels, oatmeal, cereal and fruit for us to enjoy. But there was a coffee machine far too high tech for me, so I needed the office staff to help me use it. Then there was only one carafe for cream and sugar, and you had to go interrupt other diners if you wanted to take it from their table.
-rooms didn't have fridge or microwave. The room feels like it is a place you could spend a lot of time (especially with the balcony and the table and chairs) but without a place to store food and drinks, or reheat them, there's really no reason to spend any time there.
-property itself has no ambiance. For someone looking for quiet little nooks to relax outdoors, this is not your place. The property is a series of 3 buildings, connected by paved parking lots. there is one small green space situated between 2 of the buildings that had a few plastic chairs and a pop-up canopy.
Overall, it was a nice weekend, but there was nothing that wowed me about this property. If anything, I was just confused about how to act while talking to the office staff. The website tries to indicate that they are also a "gallery". The true extent of this is that there is original photography in their office/dining area that could be for sale, but it isn't a rotating exhibit, or high art.
Not bad, but I will try something different on my next trip to the area.
