A friend and I stayed at Wilkie's Inn last weekend when we were in Pacific Grove to visit the Monarch butterflies, a mere two blocks away in a two-acre cove. The best part of the room was the down pillows, ample and inviting. The beds were fairly comfortable, tho the decor was dated. The telephone line crackled. We needed instructions on how to use the television. There was spare furniture and carpeting sitting outside our room, as if a remodeling were underway. Upon check-out, I commented on how difficult it was to use the shower divertor. Adopting a defensive tone, the woman behind the counter explained how to operate the gadget. That's exactly what I did, I said, emphasizing that it was a tricky device. She would not accept constructive criticism, which left me shaking my head as I departed the Inn. A shame, because the (male) staff provided great restaurant recommendations.
