Although I like to plan trips out in advance, booking something 7 months out is a little extreme, even for me. I heard about these wonderful cottages after doing an internet search for "unique California hotels." I checked several times a day for cancellations on ReserveAmerica, hoping to snag a room on a coveted weekend. And based on advice from other reviews, once I saw a Saturday open up, I booked it immediately.
I stayed in a dorm-style cottage, the Beachcomber's Lodge, in Room 38E, which contained two twin beds. My room did not have an ocean view, and was located next to the main walkway that leads from the office down to the beach area. Because of the close proximity of this cabin to the office, I did not need transportation to move my belongings into the room. The space is quaint and nautical themed. A word of caution for this particular room: there are steps leading *down* to the floor, which I totally missed as my arms were full, and I ended up falling. Doh!
The kitchen area with the floor to ceiling windows was simply amazing, and the view outside is spectacular as well. Very peaceful, too. I was worried about a dorm-style setting, but I was lucky, and everyone seemed quite mellow and quiet. There are no TVs and no wi-fi access, and it gets quite dark at night. In fact, I was given both a flashlight and a portable heater for my stay. So, you can use these unplugged evening hours to read, play games, or grab cocktails at The Beachcomber Cafe, if you so choose.
Yes, the parking situation is less than desirable, but understandable. After parking your car across the street, you can either take a scenic trail back to the cottages, or go underneath the freeway in a tunnel (but this ultimately means you have to walk upstairs or uphill to this particular cottage). The other option would be to pay $1 for the Beachcomber's Cafe to transport you across the freeway, but you will still not get out of having to walk uphill. So, something to keep in mind if you are not a fan of stairs or hills!
I utilized the very few hours of sunlight I had the afternoon I checked in and snapped photos of everything in the area. It's a fascinating bit of history, especially so close to where I live.
Such a great, affordable staycation. I hope to get a chance to stay here again to try out another room/cottage when there's more sunlight hours to enjoy the time.
