We had a wonderful stay at the beautiful Newport Coast Villas. We are Marriott Vacation Club members and had requested a unit on the top floor but were given one on the third floor in Building 2800, which did have a wonderful view. The beds were comfy, even the fold-out couches, and the setup (for 7 of us including two small children) worked well. DH was a little disappointed our unit still had tube TVs instead of flat screens. As “owners” we did not opt to pay for daily maid service, so as instructed, we set our bags of garbage outside the front door for daily pickup between 8 and 10 AM. The problem was that the local crows have noticed this system and immediately rip into the plastic bags. It happened every morning, so I imagine the resort will work on some alternate arrangement.

Thanks to other TA reviews, we knew about the nearby grocery stores, plus the discount Marriott guests receive at the Pavilions (although you can get the same discount if you’re a Safeway Club member). Our family had two rental cars, so driving to restaurants and other sites near the Villas was not a problem. We received two parking passes but only one of our cars could be parked at our building; the other had to be left in a parking garage a short walk away. Wasn’t a problem for us, but I guess it could be for others.

We spent three days at Disneyland, went to an Anaheim Angels game, and took drives along the coast (had a delicious lunch at Nick’s in Laguna Beach). Also did some shopping at Fashion Island and had a nice dinner at El Torito Grill. Some of our family went to Balboa Peninsula, but most of the attractions were closed on a non-peak-season weekday. Also ate at the Beachcomber but the weather was too windy to spend much time at Crystal Cove State Park.

We witnessed one fender-bender in Laguna Beach, and the next day our daughter saw (and stopped to help) an elderly gentlemen who fell asleep at the wheel and crossed all oncoming lanes of PCH to narrowly miss a ravine and end up in the shrubbery. He was fine—but both car accidents served to remind us that as visitors to the area, it pays to stay alert and not get too distracted looking at the scenery or the GPS!

The location of the Marriott Villas was convenient for us, and provided a relaxing break from our Disney activities. We used the Grotto pool and the main pools. DH enjoyed watching the Kentucky Derby on the poolside bar TV, and he and our 5-yr-old grandson played putt-putt golf and spent time in the arcade.

As others have mentioned, we did hear guests walking around in the unit above us. It became very obvious that new guests had checked in the day before we left, because they were much noisier than the previous ones.

We had a great time on our vacation, and look forward to staying at the Marriott Newport Coast Villas again on future trips.

The rooms were very nicely appointed - 2 bedroom/2 bath. Our room had a broken shower head and the phones did not work. Not really a big deal, but I didn't really expect to find broken items in a room at this price point. We did get a lot of noise from the unit above us - they kept their music playing 24 hours, and we could hear it all, so the walls are fairly thin. We did have a bit of a misunderstanding with the front desk staff over the definition of "view". We were told the room had "a view overlooking the golf course", and what the room actually had was a view of asphalt, a fence, and a hedge. The "grotto" pool was wonderful - not too crowded, very clean and lots of lounge chairs. Overall, the issues we had were minor, but I do have a higher standard for top of the line Marriott properties, and this one didn't meet our expectations.

We are staying at one of the new buildings with an ocean view and it is fabulous. Since we are traveling with no children we are away from the pool area and it is very quiet here. The vill is 1,125. square feet with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. Very new and very well appointed. I got this villa through my time share and boy did I get lucky. Love....love.....love. This area is simply beautiful. Newport Beach is gorgeous and Laguna is a hop skip and a jump. Stunning ocean views and funky and upscale restaurants and shops. This is the Hamptons of California.

The location of the Newport Villas is unparalleled. They are placed high on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The grounds are lovely with lush landscaping. The facilities are wonderful. There are several pools and the view from the main pool is spectacular. There is very limited food on site but within a short drive are several shopping centers, grocery stores, and restaurants. Balboa Island is a relatively short drive and worth a visit for its fine dining and wonderful beaches. If you like walking Crystal Cove is an easy walk and there are some great paths in the park. The Crystal Cove Restaurant is a great spot for breakfast. It's right on the beach and you feel like you're sitting right on the shore while you eat really good food. I highly recommend it.

I didn't get a warm cozy feeling from the people at the front desk. When we checked in, the woman wasn't sure of the procedure. We drove down to the building and realized we had a building number but no room number. We called the front desk but they wouldn't give us our room number over the phone so we had to drive back up and wait in line for 10 minutes just to get our room number. The concierge desk was wonderful. We got the free "Grazie" card. They recommended "21" in Balboa for seafood. It's a little pricey but excellent. They also recommended several places not on the card but worth visiting. One word of warning, the literature says Disney tickets are available at the Concierge desk from 8:30 to 4:30. We were going to pick some up for the next day and were told they stop selling them at about 11:30. Maintenance appeared immediately when we called to report water coming out of the light fixture in the kitchen ceiling and the mess was cleaned up promptly.

The two bedroom condo was quite large. It had a full kitchen , two bedrooms, two bathrooms, dining area, living room and washer and dryer. The place was very clean. The master bathroom was marvelous, the bed was comfortable, the living room furniture was not. If we had gotten a room with a view, I might have rated this resort as outstanding. We had a first floor room. The first floor isn't really like a ground floor, in this building - that would be the second floor. The first floor reminded me of a walkout basement. The smaller bedroom in front had a view of a steep bank and the elevator. The master and living room shared a view of a road and the bottom of some trees which blocked any sun from reaching the windows. It was always dark. We took to calling the place "The Bat Cave." As others have noted the walls and floors are very thin and it was very easy to hear people in other units.

I think these condos would be great for families. They have lots of space, can sleep 8 with the foldout couches, and the resort has lots to do. If you can get a view, or at least some sunshine through the window, the condo would probably be very nice. For the price we paid for our cave, I think we could do better elsewhere.
