“Worst hotel/motel experience ever”

Okay, i made a mistake and somehow booked a "smoking" room here (did anyone know that strictly smoking rooms still even exist in California?). I was stuck trying to book a place that was affordable and close to the marathon that we would run the following day since we could no longer camp due to the PCH collapse. But I don't hold THAT against them. i do hold these things against them:

1. There was no receptionist, I had to wait 10 minutes before anyone came up to help me (it was 3:00p!). I even walked in and looked in their office. Nothing. Made as much noise as i could. Nothing. Couldn't get a hold of anyone. Lady was pretty rude, not apologizing for the wait, etc.

2. Caterpillars/worms EVERYWHERE outside the room, stuck on the walls, overhang, some in cocoons, others smashed by people walking around. It was really disgusting. At least clean the area around it. It was very disturbing to see so many worms around.

3. To my surprise, the room was a smoking room, but that's my fault. Smoke was VERY overpowering and we could not stay here at all. Bed was a double (90% sure) although it was stated it is a queen. Soooo many stains on the floor. Dark little room, can't believe i wasted money on this. I'd literally rather be sleeping outside in a ditch next to PCH.

3. They offered no help in rectifying my troubled situation initially. Told me that I booked through Kayak, so i'd have to speak to them. Sure, that's logical, but show some compassion and don't just tell me too bad you're on your own.

4. The owner (i assume) finally offered to roll in a machine that takes the smell out, but it was deemed "hazardous to health" if we were in there while it does its "magic"... this is not the most comforting way to say things, this can't be good for us if we come in right after you use this machine. Seriously, i don't think anything would have taken the smell out of that room.

Didn't look enough in the room to see what condition it was in, i just knew it was disgusting and we couldn't stay here. At the end of the hour of desperately seeking for another hotel room, we told them we will not be staying here. You shouldn't either. They took our money with no compassion.

Room Tip: Do not book here, go ANYWHERE else

Its your average inn. The do have better than average continental breakfast. The closet has full length mirrors and pretty big bathroom (we were in a handicapped room). I would recommend this place.

This was a unique situation where guest booked the room under a special plan called Choice Employee rate. This is a heavily discounted rate with certain restrictions. It must be made online with a special rate code , available in only certain room types, and based on availability.
Since only basic room types are allowed on this rate plan, guests cannot make the reservation online and call on the phone to " Upgrade" to a different room type. This is what front desk tried to explain to the guest and I am sure if the guest is a Choice Hotel owner, he/she is well aware of this policy and restrictions

“Average, but not terrible at all”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2010

I had a decent room- 214 (smoking room). Bed was pretty good. TV worked great- liked the HBO. My room was on a corner, and had a small "courtyard" just outside the door, shielding me from most of the people coming and going. Some minor noise from other guests very early in the morning (that's why I travel with earplugs). No issues parking or feeling safe.
Positives: Professional, friendly front desk staff
Mostly very clean (had one friendly spider under the toilet- no big deal)
Has Iron and Ironing board- very important
Bed in usable condition- no bedbugs
Maid did a good job with refreshing room
Negatives: As one other person noted- big gap under door let the cold air in
The above is not good with a marginal to non-existent heating system (it worked eventually)
Room labeled as "Vending" had no vending machines in it!
While I did not have any issues with other guests, I can see where this place might be a magnet for a rowdy crowd in the warmer months.
Parking lot not well lit at all. This did not bother me, but it might creep some people out.
Overall: I MIGHT go back, if the price was the same as what I paid (about 45.00 a night in early January).
