I stayed in this motel for one night on my way from the Bay Area to Santa Barbara for a weekend. The stay itself was rather unremarkable, but a few days after the trip, I discovered a mysterious $50 fee charged to my credit card. When I called the hotel to ask about it, I was informed that it was a cleaning fee because I had a pet in my room. I most certainly did NOT have a pet in my room, which I believe the hotel in Santa Barbara would also attest to. They claim to have evidence of this, which I requested that they send to me, but they so far have not complied with this request. For the first call, I was informed that the manager would call me the next day when he arrived at work.
Apparently, this manager is too much of a coward to actually speak to me, because he had another employee call me the next day to tell me that the charge would be reversed, but he reiterated, and this is a direct quote, "there was definitely a pet in the room." Basically, they are now not only attempted to charge me a bogus fee, but they're also accusing me of lying to them. I also complained about the fact that I found this by checking my credit card statement, and was informed that the manager had called me but I was unavailable (as I was driving along the coast in an area with very spotty cell reception), but the gutless manager didn't bother to leave a message. At this point, the hotel employee claimed that no hotels anywhere would tell their customers when a fee has been charged after they leave.
There are plenty of other hotels in the Monterey area. Avoid this one, unless you like to patronize thieves and liars. If you do stay with them, make sure to check your credit card statements carefully, since they seem to hope that you won't notice when they try to pull this.
