We arrived early and were graciously given our room by a friendly gentelman. The room was well appointed with a nice fireplace and outside shared terrace. Our breakfast was more than adequate and the hostess gave us great recommendations on things to do and drives that gave us a spectacular view of the area. Our only complaint was that our bed frame sqeeked all night long ( and we weren't "actively" using it!) Will definately return. Lovely little place great location..Note: avoid the English Pub near the warf very dirty and awful food!

We were driving round looking for a place to stop before flying home from SF the next day. We took a chance and pulled in here and didn't regret it for a minute. Edmund was on duty and he was really helpful with dining suggestions. Our room was no 20 - and it was lovely. Fabulous bed - enormous and comfortable. Full price was $130 for the 2 of us including breakfast. In Monterey this is pretty good value. I would definitely go back.

I gave Merritt House a 3, but I think there is a TON of potential for this place to be a 4 with a little work-- at least speaking specifically about room #8 where I stayed. The space was large, and loved that the vaulted ceilings made it feel even larger. However, the room could use new carpet and a bathroom renovation, which would easily make this a 4. The bathroom was clean, just dated. The location was perfect-- in walking diststance to the main street, harbor and a reasonable walk or bike ride to the acquarium, which I highly recommend. Friendly staff and a good overall stay.

I had a room in the non-historic part on the ground floor. The color scheme was modern with Asian pieces, the room and mini fridge were clean. The biggest downsides were the lack of a makeup mirror on the otherwise awesomely spacious vanity, and the irritatingly loud bathroom fan, which automatically turned on with the light. The room could have also used a bit more lighting. The comfy room, good breakfast, extremely pleasant staff and excellent location outweighed the negatives for me, but if a magnificent bathroom is a must-have for you, you should ask for a room in the historic part.
