“Historic Find”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We purchased two nights using Travel Zoo special. We were surprised by the lack of an elevator, but were told it was "historic" and could not work (not sure how it passes the ADA).

Carpets were quite dirty in public areas. Some stairs were literally unsafe as the edges were giving way.

Room was OK. The need to get some real TV's (old ones and poorly working). Bathroom adequate. The need to replace toilets with larger bowls and higher ones...(being over 6'1"...it was a challenge.

Walls are paper thin. The street and other noises had to be a problem to many. The earplugs were a clue.

Breakfast lacked. A few added things would make it passable. Suggest...sausages, bacon or waffles.

It was a delightful setting...my wife loved that aspect.

Note about parking. If you park on the street during the day, one hour limit. If you find a place after 5:00 PM you can leave it until 10 AM...and it seems to be safe. Homeless people around, but not a problem. Walgreens open 24/7 just down the street.

Room Tip: Get one facing the street. If you can afford a suite all gets better.

“European charm in historic Monterey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

We booked this hotel through a Travelzoo deal. When I called to make a reservation the staff was friendly and accommodating . I asked if we could have a room with a view of the bay. He said he would try to get us one. Upon arrival we checked in and we were given an upgrade to a small suite. We were also given several vouchers for wine tasting, a $25.00 certificate at the cute little Italian cafe across the street and a coupon for a local restaurant. This hotel does not have a working elevator so pack light for the climb up the stairs. The room was small, but comfortable. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was large and comfortable. It reminded me of a European hotel.
The staff was charming and had great recommendations about where to go and where to eat. They did serve a continental breakfast which was nice. The location is right in the heart of the historic district.

Room Tip: The top floor should be quieter. We had one floor above us and we could hear those above move aroun...

“Nice Find”

Great little hotel right on Alvarado St where there are many restaurants and pubs. Great service and a great price. Bellman even carried my luggage over to the Monterey/Salinas Airport Shuttle a block away. No elevator is a minor thing, but there is always a bellman on duty for luggage assistance.

“Good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

We stayed for 4 nights at the Monterey Hotel. We stayed in a standard double room which was small compared to rooms we had stayed in at various motels on our trip. The bed wasn't greatly comfortable and there wasn't any seating space to speak of. However it was clean and had nice Victorian style decor. The shuttered windows looked out on to walls, though which wasn't particularly exciting! The hotel itself is attractive, however, and there was a good spacious room for breakfast (a standard buffet breakfast). There was free -wifi in the rooms, but there wasn't a coffee machine. The one major thing the hotel had going for it was its location. Just a few minutes and you are at the harbour. The surrounding area has lots of restuarants (the best one being the Italian opposite). You have to pay for parking which I think may be standard in many centrally located hotels. However we did get our room at a very good discount internet price so perhaps if we were willing to pay more, we may have enjoyed our room more.

Room Tip: Pay a bit more to get a larger room

“fabulous find in downtown monterey”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We found a great deal on Travelzoo, but would stay at this hotel even at full rate....this is a referbished circa 1904 victorian hotel. Mint condition, rooms nice (choice of king or queen, or a suite)....we opted for the suite, which had a separate living room with sofa bed, TV, fireplace, and wet bar. bedroom was roomy with tv and two two closets. for those who can climb stairs (four stories, no elevator) this is a great find. And it across / and down the street from great restaurants (including the monterey Caffe Trieste).

Room Tip: the suite is a little more expensive but the extra room and roomier bathroom is worth the price
