“Tired B and B, reluctant staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2012

We arrived in Mendocino shortly before 3 p.m., anticipating the chance of an early check-in, prior to an afternoon walk around the town. Surprisingly, the printed sign on the front door stated "will return at 3 p.m. " so we went for our walk first.. not a problem... On our return we rang the bell, checked in and were shown our room and told that someone else would be there at 8 a.m. the next morning to provide breakfast. Our room was bright and the bed comfortable but with peeling paintwork and a bathroom sadly in need of updating it all somehow felt "tired"...Also very disappointing was the lack of coffee or tea making facilities.. (Other B and B's we have visited that don't provide these in the room, generally have coffee and hot water available most of the time). At 8 a.m. we went to the dining area hoping for at least some tea or coffee and were coldly told by the lady in the kitchen that it would be ready "shortly". As it turns out breakfast was available sometime after 9.. The food was good when it was finally ready (quiche, scones, fruit, cereal and yogurt) and we enjoyed our breakfast table conversation with fellow visitors. The general feeling overall at the JD House was that the place is just okay, despite not being run too well and certain areas needing some fresh paint and updating...

“We love this B&B!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2012

My husband and I just returned from our 4th stay at this lovely B&B. It is right in town so we can just park the car and walk into town to enjoy all the fun shops or dine in any of several high-quality restaurants. We especially like the staff at the JD House, Becky being our favorite. She is always so welcoming and really knows the area well so can give advice on the best places to visit. The views of the ocean are wonderful here as well and the bluffs are only a short drive or a brisk walk away. Try the food and atmosphere at the MacCallum House - another favorite. Or join the locals at Patterson's Pub - always fun and good food.

Room Tip: The Captain's room has the best room but the bathroom is small and not well-lit. Go for Osprey...

“Always Fantastic!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Every time my wife and I go to Mendocino, we stay in the Osprey Room at the JD House. You get an amazing view from an amazing and very comfortable room!! The staff there are very helpful. Breakfast is always great, and they use local produce. I think we have stayed there four times. We have never been disappointed. We look forward to our next stay. If you are looking for a great place to stay in the heart of Mendocino, the JD House is the place for you!!

“Another Relaxing Trip To The JD House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

This was our second time staying in the Port room at the JD House. We enjoyed our first trip and felt that it was a good place to visit again. We were not disappointed. We love going to Mendocino and relaxing. That is exactly what we did. Next time we will plan further in advance and get one of the second floor rooms so that we have a private balcony and a little better view.

Don't miss the breakfast! The scones are always good and the risotto quishe is amazing!

“A nice surprise”

My husband and I perused many a website of Mendocino accomodations in anticipation of our upcoming weekend getaway. Most seemed high priced, too frilly or too far from the center of town. We came upon the JD House, but being late in the game, the only room available was the Water Tower room, which also happens to be the cheapest. We booked it and are so glad we did ... what a deal! While it sits right off the street, and doesn't have a view, it is still a pretty cool little place to spend a night. The water tower itself is original, historic and very charming. The room was clean, nicely decorated and we thoroughly enjoyed cozying up with our books by the wood stove in the sitting area. You have access to the beautiful garden, back deck and main rooms of the house, including a fairly good breakfast. We also took full advantage of being able to walk out our door and take just a few steps to be in the heart of Mendocino's restaurants, shops and charm. The innkeeper was also very helpful, making photocopies of maps for us, as well as an evening dinner reservation. We felt this place was quite a value compared to some of all the other places that are touted so frequently.

Room Tip: The Water Tower room may be the best deal in Mendocino!
