We arrived in Mendocino shortly before 3 p.m., anticipating the chance of an early check-in, prior to an afternoon walk around the town. Surprisingly, the printed sign on the front door stated "will return at 3 p.m. " so we went for our walk first.. not a problem... On our return we rang the bell, checked in and were shown our room and told that someone else would be there at 8 a.m. the next morning to provide breakfast. Our room was bright and the bed comfortable but with peeling paintwork and a bathroom sadly in need of updating it all somehow felt "tired"...Also very disappointing was the lack of coffee or tea making facilities.. (Other B and B's we have visited that don't provide these in the room, generally have coffee and hot water available most of the time). At 8 a.m. we went to the dining area hoping for at least some tea or coffee and were coldly told by the lady in the kitchen that it would be ready "shortly". As it turns out breakfast was available sometime after 9.. The food was good when it was finally ready (quiche, scones, fruit, cereal and yogurt) and we enjoyed our breakfast table conversation with fellow visitors. The general feeling overall at the JD House was that the place is just okay, despite not being run too well and certain areas needing some fresh paint and updating...
