The Oakwood Apartment chain caters to people who need to stay more than a few nights, thus wanting a hotel, and those who must stay for considerable length of time, thus requiring an apartment. We have been at this Oakwood for three months and may be here for several months longer as my wife undergoes medical treatment. Oakwood has treated us well and, while there are clearly problems, it is good place to stay under such circumstances.
I would never considering staying at Oakwood for a week. Get a hotel room if that is what you want. Oakwood is much more like an apartment or condominium complex. There are 500 units in about a dozen buildings. There is a "clubhouse" with a small store, exercise room, and conference facilities. The pool is adequate on weekdays but over taxed on weekends as is the relatively nice jacuzzi.
Apartments come in studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom configurations and can be rented fully- partially- (everything but the pots, pans, and linens), or unfurnished. Parking is convenient and the grounds are well maintained. Each unit has a balcony that varies with the size of the unit. As with any apartment, your neighbors' behavior determines, in large measure, how much you enjoy your unit.
We pay rent on a month-to-month basis and thus are not subject to the hotel tax. Oakwood did not ask us to pay first-and-last months rent nor did they ask for a security deposit. They gave us a second parking place at no extra charge (unheard of in the beach area) and have been very responsive to maintenance requests. The complex is three blocks from the Venice Beach pier and provides easy access to the freeway, should you need it.
If you are willing to sign a lease, I would suggest an apartment elsewhere. If you only plan a short stay, get a hotel room. But for those of us in the middle, the Oakwood Apartments provide an excellent alternative.
