“"Pillars of the Earth" for the Business Warrior”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Business warriors need inspiration and juice, and this place provides it in its grand lobby cathedral, like the great churches of medieval Europe gave the folk in Ken Follett's epic novel "Pillars of the Earth". The rooms are standard 4 star fare of medium size, and you won't draw inspiration there. But the lobby, with towering pillars, fountains, glass rocket elevators, and tiered platform architecture-- that's what will make you feel good about yourself. I travel 4 stars only for business, and it helps me to be psyched up and juiced with winner drive. Plus, there is a full self service 24 hour Fed Ex Office (Kinko's) off the lobby that trumps any hotel's "business center". The circular lobby cafe doubles as workspace, we were all with our laptops, meeting clients (the fountain white noise gives confidentiality), no pressure to order any food, more like a concierge asking if you want anything to eat or drink. Plus, those glass elevators were filmed in "True Lies", with Arnold chasing the terrorist to the roof, who escaped by a motorcycle leap to the poor below. I looked at that pool from the elevator and thought of the movie with every ride.

So, if you are after a large luxury room at any price, this isn't the place. But if you are ok with a medium sized room and a good rate down the cavernous corridor in the Taj Mahal, this is it.

Your Lordship,

Thank you for the kind words and positive review. While a number of Westin Hotels are brand specific you called it right. The Westin Bonaventure was one of the first Westin Hotels, having just completed a 35 million dollar renovation we wanted to introduce The new Westin feel and maintain the grand design of John Portman. Regarding the movies True Lies was filmed here more recently Hancock and The Soloist were also filmed here. Keep an eye out this summer the new Batman movie was recently wrapped at The Westin Bonaventure. Thank you again and we look forward to your return.

Get a room high up for the full l.a. Experiment. You will see and hear the traffic. Amazing with the view but the noises are a bit disturbing.

Thank you for the great review. Depending on the day or night downtown Los Angeles can be a bit noisy . With that said the higher floors have great views and when sleeping we installed new heavier black out drapes that will quiet the city sounds. Thank you again and we look forward to your return.

“Nice clean room, good business hotel...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Well, its big! The architecture is a bit strange with 'cavernous' lobby 'levels. The first through 5 floors are mixed with strange dining options, retail stores, offices and the like in what appears to have been an attempt at a Mall of shops when the property was conceived. It appears to struggle to be leased, and is filled with an odd mix. It is also a bit confusing to navigate. Very strange.

Health club is large.

Lobby bar is nice.

Room was average size, very clean...and comfortable. Pretty much standard business hotel room. The room appears to have been completely renovated of recent. Actually, the complete hotel was renovated. Lobby areas, hallways and all public areas are fresh and new.

Service was good.

The place is HUGE.

Room Tip: I had a standard room in the 'yellow' tower. It was fine. There are 4 towers (i think). B...

Dear JamesE339, Thank you very much for the review you provided. I hope your fellow travellers find it very helpful. We are Downtown LA's largest hotel and when the architect John Portman designed it in 1976 we were to be a "City within a City". While we have changed over the years with retail outlets, restaurants, etc. we still remain an iconic symbol of LA. Thanks for recognizing our recent renovation. We invested $32M to update top to bottom.

Please email me when you are planning to return to the Westin Bonaventure. You are a world traveller with many reviews. I am glad we were able to deliver on service, comfort and cleanliness for you and our other guests.

“Central downtown location, massive hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

There are 4 towers in the hotel all are connected, but it is a massive hotel. I was on a SPG preferred floor. I believe I was in a newly remodeled room. It was a decent size, large bed. I was only there for a night, but it had it been more the bathroom and closet size would have been in a factor as they were quite small. They have a nice outdoor pool. The gym is large with several treadmills, elliptical, and machine weights as well as free weights. There are many dining options in the hotel. The bona vista lounge actually rotates which is cool and weird all at once. I didn't dine at the steak house.

“Swanky!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I stayed at this hotel while in LA.

When you pull up to the front, you are directed to pull up and drive into the garage under the hotel. Make sure you factor in an additional $40 for valet (they gladly add it to the room).

You are pointed toward some escalators and then you arrive at the lobby. This is more like a place you would find in Las Vegas then anywhere else. The lobby is a three story atrium with people all over the place. Lots of airline workers, they must have a corporate rate here.
The center is a round bar with giant pools of water and fountains. Dim mood lighting everwhere and four glass elevators on each corner. There are shops, restaurants, and lounges all around the sides. Couches and tables around the perimeter for free wifi access.

After you check in you will be pointed toward your tower (red, blue, green, or yellow) I am not sure if there is any differences between the towers. I had the red tower which boasts a revolving restaurant on the 34th floor (I tried to grab a drink at the bar later that night, but they don't have a bar...only table seating) The rooms in the red tower are very nice. I had a great view of the city (floor to ceiling windows from side to side) as well as the blue tower's glass elevator which shoots up and down with passengers throughout the night. The bed took up most of the room and is super comfortable. The bathroom has all sorts of little amenities including the signature Westin Heavenly Shower head...the pressure was equal to a fire hose.
The only drawback was an early morning powerwash of one of the roof's about 10 stories below my room. I needed to get up anyways.

They have an outdoor pool located on the fourth floor roof. You can see it lit up at night from one of the red tower elevators.

With my check-in I received one free glass of wine at the main lobby bar. I ate dinner as well..total tab $30. Free waters in the room, kinda surprised me.

I never left the hotel. I think that is the idea. I could stay for a week and not go to all the different places in the hotel.
