LA was my first experience of the USA, for the first time, and what a welcome it was to stay in Hollywood. I'm not saying that I thought it was like the movies, but I didn't expect a run-down slum area, where English is hardly spoken, the service industry is made up of 50+ year olds who clearly have no families to support them, and you literally cannot walk down the street relaxed because if you slow down you might get begged for money, or offered drugs, or offered girls by their pimp who are in the back seat of a car. So whilst outside wasn't unsafe, you needed your wits about you and so you'd really hope that your accomodation was a refuge from the outside. Not quite. Everyone apart from one New Zealand couple were long-term Americans, who clearly don't want actual tourists there. This means you are sharing with people on the run from domestic violence, runaways from home/hospital/rehab, people just out of prison, and those just waiting for their big break into acting (this being their 7th year in Hollywood). My dorm room was full of flyers (one of the wannabes had a job touting some restaurant) and I literally almost got into a fight to get piles of them moved off the bed I had paid for. So then I slept with one eye open as I had this flyer guy coming in and out all hours of the night (to get more flyers, drugs, who knows). Breakfast it pretty much a piece of toast and some UHT milk and chocolate powder, and so combining that with the area you feel so depressed and just want to cry. I had booked for four nights but left after two, didn't bother trying to get refunded. Just ran to Santa Monica. At least there was the beach!
