I spent several nights in this hotel in August, 2011. As stated in other reviews, this is not an area where regular folks stroll around after dark, but truthfully, I would not do that in Kansas City either.
The location is near the tourist area on Sunset Strip and while not really walking distance, it was only minutes away. Most folks are shopping and carrying bags so walking isn’t likely anyway.
During my stay the hotel room was clean and well maintained. The decor was modest and the linens were clean, soft and appeared fairly new. I don’t usually sleep well in hotels but the bed was comfortable, perfect firmness for me and I slept like a baby.
I did not worry about security at all as the doors had a deadbolt and a swing-over latch which all operated perfectly.
The staff was efficient and not unfriendly. Our only misunderstanding was when we asked for a do-not-disturb sign to avoid having the room cleaned but they forgot and came in anyway. Nothing was stolen and we had several high value electronic devices.
Photos of the pool are a bit misleading as it is very small and mostly in the shade. We used it anyway and it was fine- the water was too cold for me but my friends swam and we sat around the pool for a few hours with no issues. The water appeared to be perfectly clean.
I did not notice any unsavory people hanging around the place and felt perfectly safe with all women in our group.
Returning to LA later this year and plan to stay at the Vagabond Inn again. I would recommend it for the location and price. I saw no bugs and no issues with the staff or anything not functioning properly. The tub/shower was clean and the water pressure was just like home. I liked the place.
