It's been 6 years since I last stayed at this property. Back then, I was impressed with the property that it made me fall in love with the Hyatt brand. Now it's 2012 and I've finally returned, hundreds of nights in hotel beds later and this time as a Gold Passport Diamond. Was the Hyatt Regency Long Beach as awesome as I remember it?
I was originally in the area to attend a convention right at the Long Beach Convention Center as well as meeting up with old friends. This property worked perfectly for both! It's right next door to the convention center and is much closer than the Renaissance and Westin, both of which are still a walking distance away from the LBCC (and still much closer than the Hilton). However, if you spend a day walking around a convention, the proximity of the Hyatt pays in dividends...at least in the form of tired feet!
The Pike shopping center is right across the street, Shoreline Village a short walk , and a bunch of other restaurants of Downtown Long Beach a stone's throw away so it worked great for finding places to hang out with friends!
Now for the room itself, I was upgraded to a Regency Club Floor room which was recently remodeled. I looked very impressive and I couldn't help but relive that same "wow" that I had as a nascent solo hotel guest in this property 6 years ago. Was greeted by the entrance light lighting up a hand holding an apple which at first I thought was a clever way to put welcome plate fruit. (Yes, I did try to remove the apple from the hand...much to my disappointment!) The room had a chaise lounge which included a blanket which worked great for afternoon naps! There was audio/video plug-ins for all your tech stuff that seems to be proliferating more across the Hyatt brand. The bathroom seemed to be a bit on the tight side. And, thankfully, the HDTV HAS HD channels which is something that seems to be a rarity as I seem to constantly get hotels that upgraded their TVs but stick with analog channels.
Now for the Regency Lounge. It's a whole different animal than what I remembered 6 years ago! They have chilled soft drinks and water available in a refrigerator along with periodicals located next to the entrance. I didn't come in for breakfast but I did make sure to try out the evening hors d'oeuvres. The hot selection seemed to have downgraded than what I last remembered but the cold selection seemed impressive (still can't get enough of the marinated mushrooms they had out!).
In terms of service, I found the staff that I encountered were good, no complaints here!
Speaking of renovations...do watch out for the work they're doing at the top floor. The front desk staff usually warn you that they'll do renovations at a certain time period during the day. And indeed, it can be LOUD. If the alarm clock failed to wake me up several times, then the workers on the floor above me did! They stop for the evening and night, but don't expect to be sleeping in to, say, 10AM. ;)
