It's easy to drive past this low profile resort on your way down the coast, but don't. We turned into the driveway and were greeted by the valet and doorman with a smile, then welcomed into the airy lobby. The front desk and concierge were happy we were there and efficiently checked us in.
We stayed in the main buidling (Tower), on the 4th floor. The fact that it was the most gorgeous weekend ever in Southern California certainly helped impress, as from our room, with the waves and sand just under our balcony, we could clearly see Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Island beyond it. We could see up to Palos Verdes to the north. The view was stunning and the sound of the waves crashing mesmerizing.
We joined friends who have stayed here over 30 times and we get why they come here, visit after visit. The view and hospitality can't be beat. The linens were wonderfully soft and bed and pillows excellent. If you get turn down service, they leave the room aglow with lights from under the bed. You can leave the glass sliders to your veranda open for full volume waves when you sleep, as there are sliding shutters you can close and lock.
Earplugs are provided as their "greatest asset" is also their "loudest asset". The waves crash and boom, you can't call to have them turned down or off! That also means you get a view of an amazing sunset, that you can see dolphins at play (we did!) and watch the SUPs, surfers, pelicans and others playing in the water. I found the ambiance, the waves, the sea air both refreshing and relaxing.
We also enjoyed their bar and restaurant at Splashes. You can't beat the view - wait, have I mentioned the view?! - the food is excellent, and the prices are what you might expect at an ocean front resort, i.e. not inexpensive! They have a good wine list, inventive bar food (rock shrimp sopes were delicious), friendly staff and serve three meals a day in the restaurant. Try the Pomegranate Blueberry juice at breakfast. Other diners will think you're having a glass of cabernet for breakfast and its wonderfully tasty, as well as healthy.
We only spent one night at the Surf & Sand and we live just up PCH in the LA area, but we really felt like we had been on a vacation after just a weekend here. We will be back and I am already planning the special occasions we will spend here. If you are looking for romance, or relaxation or a quick getaway or all of those, this is it.
