“What could be better?”

Wow, a real registration card, a jittery elevator, a sticky door to the room and a real key! I expected to see Greta Garbo walking down the hallway. If you want the modern stuff go down the street. Why does everything have to be new? The staff (everyone of them) were very professional including the laborer cleaning the chairs at the rose garden (and courteous). The food was over the top, lunch appetizer of crab and shrimp on the observation deck with a glass of red looking at the surf; talisman. Claes Ovation for dinner, with attentive staff, but not hovering, again with a glass of red married with the scallops took me back to a time when the guest was the guest and not a john coming in to spend a dollar, drop a toke and leave and never to be back. You are someone in that room for a couple of hours. The staff at Hotel Laguna care, and we will be back, in fact, we are planning our daughters wedding there. Initially, it was down the street at a much fancier, stuffy resort, but we found this Hotel met everyone of our needs, plus you can walk to everything in downtown. I live in Las Vegas where every 30 years they must implode a historicbuilding to build a new resort to meet a 4 or 5 diamond criteria, the Hotel Laguna was a delightful surprise.

Room Tip: Room #206 was the Hotel's choice for me, excellent choice.

“If you spend most of your time out of the hotel...”

you will enjoy the location right in the heart of town. We've been going for about 15 years and accept the horrible bathrooms, windows that don't keep out noise or weather, and mismatched furniture. We do appreciate the convenient breakfast, great long-time parking attendant, and sense of history. With new "management" we did experience a bad situation last year when housekeeping locked us out of our room and we were blamed for it although it was impossible for us to have done so, not being the last people in the room. It was late at night and there were no keys on the premises! This year I noticed some cosmetic improvements, but obviously it will take more money to fix plumbing, windows, etc. and the trade-off will probably be higher rates. Recommend, but only if you're not the picky type.

Room Tip: Village View is cheaper but you will experience street noise. If you want to hear the ocean you must...

“It grew on us”

My husband and I booked this romantic anniversary trip online without seeing the hotel. Their website shows just one room and of course it is the best one. Our room looked nothing like it. At first I was disappointed and a little embarrassed. There was only the beds and a small table in the room. The room was small and I was shocked to see such old windows (wind out kind). But I have to say that as the two days and nights passed we became more enchanted with the place. The location is superb and the restaurant view is amazing. Stepping onto the beach made up for the small bathroom where you can't open the door without hitting the toilet. The breakfast had yummy pastries, a coffee machine which made several kinds of drinks and yogurts, cereal and fruit. I was content. The reason I couldn't give four stars was because our room was above the delivery dock and we woke up both mornings to the beeping of the trucks backing in. The noise from the playground swings was kind of annoying - constant squeaking. My husband suggests you bring WD-40 and fix this for everyone ;)

Room Tip: Our room was 110 and it was on the north side with a partial ocean view. Noisy traffic below.

“Historic landmark with a great view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

We celebrated our anniversary with a weekend stay. Our room overlooked the Laguna Main beach in both directions. We were treated to a beautiful sunset before heading across the street for dinner. We had complimentary drinks on the beach front patio bar with a great view and heaters for outside winter seating. The room had a historic charm about it. Dont come expecting the newest of the newest. But the property is well kept and a landmark since 1930. Often visited by Hollywood for a close get away. We would certainly return.

“Right on The Beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

What more do you need: the Hotel Laguna is literally on the sand in the center of Laguna Beach. From your room you can open your windows and see, smell and taste the Pacific.

Yes the rooms are old and in need of remodeling. Yes the amenities are substandard including a joke of a "continental breakfast". But really, so what. The Hotel has seen everything there has been to see in Laguna Beach for the last 80 years and is a living breathing museum. And the location cannot be beat.

Where else can you spend $200 (or less) and walk 100 feet into the waters of the Pacific, then back to your room to get ready for an evening in one of the nicest spots in the country. Great restaurants, wine bars, art galleries are an easy stroll from the hotel.

I’ve been staying there for years, any chance I get. Some people will hate the old carpeting, the slightly leaning floors, the antique bathrooms and the small rooms. But you're there for the views of Main Beach, the Pacific and the proximity to the action. Go to breathe in the ocean breezes that have travelled 8,000 miles on the open ocean to reach Laguna.
