“Not Up to Par For Marriott”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

The Marriott was just Ok. Yes they have updated to a flat screen TV and the bedding is comfortable. The rest of the hotel is just subpar and needs a major renovation to be up to par with the latest Marriott Standards. The Hotel is far from all attractions in San Diego. The Conciearge room is basic and nothing to rave about. Would I stay again, Probaly not

“Friendly staff, high-priced”

The staff at the Marriott La Jolla was nice. The concierge was helpful to me on a number of occasions with recommendations and directions. The hotel rooms were nice and the hotel is convenient to the Westfield UTC Mall and a few restaurants, but don't be mislead about the location. You are really 10-15 minutes away from what I consider scenic downtown La Jolla with the signature shops, restaurants, coast line and more. The hotel's gym facility was one of the best I'd seen, but parking was overpriced ($20/day self parking and the spaces were tight in the parking garage. I parked on a less crowded, upper level just to have a bit more room.) and the food in the their snack store was a bit overpriced. Overall I enjoyed the stay but know it is a bit pricey.

“Very nice hotel, good location, but overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I spent 12 nights here during a recent business trip. The location was ideal and the front desk staff were all very professional. The ladies who cleaned the room always did an excellent job....I never ran out of clean washcloths! The evenings were cool, so it was great to open the sliding door on the balcony to let in fresh air. The bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows and a luxurious down comforter.

The fitness center was the best I've encountered in a hotel.....about 12 individual weight stations like in a regular gym, six commercial-grade treadmills, three or four elliptical trainers, asosrted stationary bicycles, all located around the indoor pool. Complementary headphones, plenty of towels, and a dispenser filled with iced water with lemon. Very refreshing.

The restaurant and concierge breakfast food was delicious. Most of all, I loved the fresh fruit.... strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew....all very sweet and juicy. Good eggs, danish, cereal, oatmeal, etc. as well.

The daily fee for internet service was $9.95 plus tax and, while I only used it two days (day one and day seven), I was charged for each day. When I received my bill on check-out day, I called the front desk. The guy adjusted it without hesitation and printed me a new bill. He said that sometimes it doesn't turn off like it should. In my opinion this should be corrected, or better yet, the might consider making room wi-fi available without charge, as so many other places do.

The $20 daily parking fee for the garage seemed excessive as well. The attendants were very polite and provided great directions. One guy even pulled up a map on his iphone so I could have a good view of where I was headed.

“Average Business Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Returning to this Hotel after about ten years it is apparent that not much has been done to keep this Hotel up to date. The bed is up to new Marriott standards but the rest of the Hotel has been frozen in time. There is no wireless internet in the rooms, the room and furniture is dated and the bathroom is small. My comments refer to the "Concierge Floor" to which I was upgraded due to my Marriott Platinum status. The elevators are extremely noisy, though my room was around the corner from the elevator lobby. Self parking is $20.00 per night. Skipped the free food in the concierge lounge due to limited selection for my Middle Eastern Guest. The breakfast in the restaurant was ok but not up to the standard the price for the buffet would suggest.

In summary, this is a Hotel you stay for location convenience when doing business within the immediate area but I would skip it if one has a choice.

Room Tip: Get as far away from the elevator as possible

“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

I booked two rooms at a great pre-pay rate for this Marriott hotel because of its nearness to my desired wedding destination in La Jolla. Having never stayed there before and banking on the Marriott reputation for their full-service hotels, I really didn't think I would be taking many chances here.

My complaint comes not from the room quality, it was good. I could even say very good. However, we reserved a room in the hotel restaurant for a pre-wedding dinner party for immediate family and that's when things went very far south. Not just with the restaurant, though it was horrible, but then the general management of the hotel did some good things to fix the problem and then promised some things yet never delivered.

Specifically, the dinner party of about 15 people waited for almost an hour to have our water refilled after the first glasses while waiting for appetizers. In general, the service was incredibly slow, the food cold and two orders from the menu came without some major ingredients/sides listed on the menu. Because one of the women in our party had been employed at another Marriott hotel with the same menu, she was shocked and called it to the attention of the server. About 40 minutes later the side dishes appeared for the three people who had previously received only a cold piece of salmon. We had to ask for simple things like water (repeatedly), no one came to our table to check on us, we had to go find them, and after a 2.5 hour dinner (with no alcohol served--so why the long lags?) when meeting with the restaurant manager, she seemed aloof, condescending and unhelpful. The general night manager of the hotel did come to our room afterward and come up with some financial solutions to the problem and promised to send up something to our room (which never, ever came--though a small thing, really)--but, it seems that Marriott corporate might want to look into the restaurant problems there--big time.

Did I mention there were only 4 other people in the restaurant at the same time we were there? Incredibly bad service! Our party was kind to our server, yet she repeatedly seemed irritated when we would ask for water or help with the wait time.

There are no "do-overs" for special wedding dinners, etc. so it was very disappointing. Our group broke up before dessert could be ordered or enjoyed because dinner had been so tortuously long and the mood was altered from happy to a "now what?" My husband and I were, of course embarrassed. We had canceled reservations at a well-known restaurant in favor of this more conveniently located for those who had traveled all day. Big mistake. The hotel may be fine and the front staff was exceptionally warm and helpful. Just be cautious about the restaurant for any important dinner/lunch.

Room Tip: Nice-sized rooms. Recently renovated hotel.
