“Upset at the La Jolla Inn - Not what it's cracked up to be”

My boyfriend and I stayed for one night on 12/10/11. Had never stayed in La Jolla Cove before and found La Jolla Inn on the internet . .. liked the pictures and amenities so decided to give it a try. When I made the reservations, I was told that we were getting a king sized room with an oceanview and that we would be able to have an early check in. When we arrived about 2:00, not only were we told that our room wasn't ready, but that we were getting a street level, queen sized room and that parking was 2 blocks away in an underground garage. We also noticed a terrible stench in the lobby, which we thought smelled like "wet dog". It was disgusting. We opened the door to the room (Room 8) and found it to be very tiny, heater didn't work and bed was old and way too soft. Carpet was filthy with what looked to be pet stains all over the carpet, as well as the room smelling like "wet dog" as well. It was very small and the only decent part was the shower and tub. No vanity area to put your toiletries on either. It was chilly in the room and the heater didn't work. Walls were very thin and we we could hear our neighbors above us late at night and sounded like someone was moving furniture, lots of banging around. My boyfriend said it sounded like they were F&%#@*^G in the shower. The noise on the street is very loud as well, as the very nice hotel next door had loud music and dj playing late and the bass sound thumping through the walls. Didn't opt for the free continental breakfast, as we were anxious to get the hell out of there and checked out about 8:30 am. Overall, very disappointed for the price. I would have stayed at the Best Western of the Sea, but they were booked that night. We would never stay here again, nor recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: I wouldn't recommend a stay here.

“Great location, skimpy breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011 via mobile

Cant be in a better location in La Jolla, building is older, but rooms are charming and quaint. Tiny room but they manage to get a full size bed and little kitchen area in it. You sacrifice some modern conveniences of a hotel for the location. We had an ocean view room and could see Scripps park And the blue water from our balcony. Breakfast is a drawback (not up to par for a B&B) consisting of muffin, bagel, and cereal. Do yourself a favor and eat at the Living Room cafe or Brockton Villa.

“Nice location and room, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

Nice...
- views
- balconies
- short walk to the ocean
- surrounded by restaurants and shopping
- roof top sun deck
- coffee and lemonade all day, plus in-room coffee
- small hotel / personal service

Not So Nice...
- underground parking garage is 2 blocks away
- limited street parking
- TV remote worked intermittently
- bathtub full of sand (like somone emptied a mop bucket)
- no bathroom vanity / no place to set anything

Overall a very nice place, but what you're really paying (a lot) for is the location in this shopping / waterfront district.

“Perfect location but DEFINITELY needs a modern tune-up.”

We had 2 rooms here in June while our friends were visiting from England. The location cannot be beat. Walkable to every point in beautiful La Jolla. The staff were welcoming and helpful and we certainly enjoyed coming back every night after very busy days of touring San Diego and the surrounding areas.

This is an older property, so the standard rooms and bathrooms are no more than "postage stamp" size. I have read other reviews here and glad to know there are upgraded rooms available of larger dimension. I would consider asking for one if I return.

Management has missed the mark on several fronts and could truly up-grade their amenities to capitalize on this wonderful property's superb locale. The bed linens have seen better days and their quality does not touch the "European" caliber La Jolla Inn claims. The towels provided were so worn and rough you could see through them. The bleach wasn't even doing the job...they were a sad, dingy gray! Looking at the tags, the towels had to be 12+ years old and reminded me of a Days Inn I stayed at on a freeway exit 10 years ago because I was too tired to drive any further.

Do yourselves a favor, La Jolla Inn! It's time to upgrade to the sumptuous high thread count sheets, some high quality down pillows and oversized plush towels that would bring you into a true "European" Inn experience. You have so much else going for you, really, you do!!! The bathrooms are small and are in desperate need of new & modern toilets and sinks. Here again, one could look the other way if the amenities of shampoo, conditioner, lotions and soaps were of a higher caliber of a boutique European standard rather than the tubes of cheap palate brand provided.

Their claims are high but fall seriously short of what we were all expecting....especially for La Jolla. I can see they are aiming in the right direction, just clearly missing the target.

Having said all the above, we slept well on the comfortable beds and thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the location and the superb views. Do not miss a few hours relaxing on their roof top deck. Again, a place of peaceful quiet with never-ending views that no other property could compete with!

I would return here if they would crank it up a notch. But when my husband and I go away, one of our highest priorities away from home are luxury linens, towels and yes, robes. It simply reminds us we are paying for the room that gives us something extra in our escape!

“Great Location! Great Staff!”

My first trip to La Jolla and my stay at the La Jolla Inn made it perfect. The continental breakfast was wonderful and delicious and the staff made my stay all the more comfortable! The location is perfect! They are located really close to some great attractions on being Scripps Park and the other the ocean! A wonderful stay in I would have to say the best hotel in the city!

Room Tip: They're all great rooms I'm sure, but the one I was in was the best.
