We stayed with our two young kids over spring break.
On the plus side: The location is great and we had a wonderful time seeing the sites of San Diego and going to the beach. Our cottage (La Jolla Haven) was spacious - plenty of room for 4 (could've easily held a couple more). The beds were clean and comfy. The reservation and check in process was very easy, courteous and prompt. Overall convenient and reasonable lodging for a family of 4 at this pricepoint.
Some cons: Our cottage was a street level, and we disliked the sheer lace curtains over the windows - it felt like anybody walking by on the street could look into the cottage as we relaxed in our PJ's at night. The kitchen was very dated, and while we made it work for family meals for a week, it could really use a major facelift. The entire cottage is made of wood and we found termite shavings on the floor in the kitchen every day (we swept them up daily)! The bathroom also needs remodeling - it was dusty and in need of new paint at a minimum. Water temperature in the shower fluctuated drastically every time water was used elsewhere in the cottage - be careful if you have young kids. Lots of aging dust catchers and tchotchkes throughout the cottage.
Overall we give it a qualified thumbs up. It worked for us and we would consider returning again - perhaps staying in another cottage. However, it is definitely not the place for the travelor who is looking for modern amenities.
