We stayed one night at this one of those renowned "classic' hotels, after spending one night nearby Manza Hot Spring. We booked a most reasonably priced room on a room charge only basis at regular rate, calling the hotel direct.
The architecture in the entrance and main restaurant are impressive.
On our arrival, we hoped to lunch at the main restaurant but were told it was full. After half an hour when we had a table, most of tables there were empty. I wonder if it (the waiting) was because of understaffing?? ( I was starving!) The waiter who served us was a bit too proud of himself or of the hotel, lacking Japanese standard courtesy, but provided proper serving services. The Chinese food was delicious, so we decided to try French dinner at the same restaurant and actually booked it once. However, we soon after found in an advertisement in a lift "please dress up for special occasion dinner tonight" so judged it would not be for us. We instead dined at Bistro Pachon at Kyukaru Ginza Street, within 10 min. walk from the hotel. It was almost empty but the food was authentic as French and of good quality.
Our room was spacious with two beds, which do not seem to match the width of the bedhead board. Being the most reasonably priced room, the view was something better not to view, which we did not mind so much.
I do not mind oldness. I rather like it, if it has been properly maintained. It was rather sad to see an apparent gap between the old part of the sought after interior deco and the recently redone cost saving part in the same room. The bathroom appeared to be yellowish with oldness and too tired giving also some concerns for toilet flush and shower water pressure.
I wonder if it could be different if paying more for an upper room ?
I have impression Kyukaru Ginza Street seems to be losing allure of the good old days, now with so many of touristy or junk shops, which is a pity.
