“Super 8 Superline? SuperStart breakfast?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2010

After checking into the Super 8 Kettleman City CA motel, I tried using the motel room phone line to call the 1-800 "superline" phone number to reserve a room for the following night. I was told to dial "0" then the 1-800 number. Dialing "0" got the hotel desk, the phone system would not allow the rest of the number. I then called the 1-800 number on my cell phone, only to listen to a recording for the next 10 minutes. I then called the office to get the direct phone number for the Super 8 in the town we were going to. I asked for the phone number for Yreka, CA. and was given the phone number for Eureka, CA. The clerk at the Eureka motel could not locate the phone number for the Yreka Super 8, so I finally went to the office and the clerk there called the Yreka motel on the motel office line. The clerk in Kettleman City was very helpful, even if he didn't code our room key correctly, leaving me at midnight standing outside my room, knocking on the door hoping my husband was awake to let me in.

This Super 8 motel, like others, had a mini-size dining room for the Super Start breakfast, 2 tables that seated four each. There was no room for us to sit. Everything they offered for the breakfast was carbohydrates, no protein.

“Serves as a fine rest stop off the highway”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2009

This is a totally serviceable rest stop off the 5. We pulled in at midnight and were warmly received by the night desk clerk. Checked out around 10am to a friendly day desk clerk. It's a no frills place that gives you a place to rest your head.

ROOM: Basic, but completely serviceable. It was clean and large. The bed was actually surprisingly comfortable. Bathroom was clean and had basic toiletries.

LOCATION: Just off the 5, not a huge number of services - gas, fast food. If you're simply looking for a half-way stop between LA and Sacramento, this is totally fine. Bonus that it's next to an In-and-Out.

PROPERTY: Yeah, it's a bit worn - but it's really only meant to be a rest stop on the road. The parking was ample, the area felt safe and though it's rough around the edges it didn't feel unkept.

PLUSES: Good mid-way point between LA and Sacramento. Fair price for what we got. Great water pressure in the shower. Friendly staff.

MINUSES: Calling the WiFi "spotty" is being generous. Signal strength was lousy, but since this was more a convenience than a need, I don't ding the place too much.

BOOKING: $65 (incl. taxes) through their website.

All-in-all, if you just need a cheap place to sleep, this place is fine. Don't go in with expectations beyond that and things should work out well.

“Probably Should Pass On This One”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2009

Place is pretty run down. We have stayed at the Super 8 in Buttonwillow CA and it is much better than this one. This one advertises high speed wireless internet access but lot's of luck finding a spare power output plug to connect to your computer . I had to request an extention cord from the office.

A better bet might be the Best Western that is right across the street from the Super 8. For an economy hotel this one really didn't live up to the standards of others.

“I don't recommended this hotel ... here's why”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2009

The door of our room had obviously been kicked in and repaired. There was a huge gap between the door and door jamb to the point where the latch didn't click right. The only thing holding the door closed was the privacy lock. This is not a safe hotel for solo females, period.

The room was suffocatingly hot when we arrived so we turned on the air. The temp in the room never changed from when we arrived at 11pm and when we left the next day at 8am. It was like being a hot dog in a rotating cooker at 7-11.

The rooms was clean enough but just barely. Everything was extremely old including the bedding.

It was a non-smoking room that was clearly used by smokers.

I was concerned enough about the safety of other guests in that room that, at check out, I told the front desk clerk. She already knew. She didn't even make a note of it.

“Do not stay here...drive on.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2009

We stayed here as a stopover for one night, boy were we sorry. Pulling in we were greeted with the green pool. Next we were greeted by the rather uncommunicative clerk. We went to our "non-smoking" room which reeked of old smoke and sweat. Absolutely nasty. The paint on the walls was peeling, the linoleum floors were pulling up, and there was a general filthyness. The beds being the worst of all. The blankets under the disgusting comforters were old, pilled, stained and threadbare. It made for a long night. Other than fast food, the only place to eat is the roadside cafe. Don't waste your money, you are better off with the fast food. In the morning, the coffee maker did not work, they do not give any amenities such as shampoo, and the "breakfast" consisted of stale cereal, english muffins, and vending machine sweet rolls. The WORST place I have ever stayed. We will never stay at another Super 8 again.
