From my first phone call to this B & B, I knew this was no ordinary inn! Jamie & Dave are just extraordinary innkeepers. If we could all adopt their kind attitude and warm hospitality, this world would definitely be headed in the right direction!!
After my call to the inn, I received a personal, detailed email from Jamie & Dave explaining a bit about the inn as well as local activities/places to visit based on our interests.
THE INN:
We were both excited about this place after reading all the great reviews from previous visitors. Our entire experience far exceeded our already hightened expectations. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH jJamie & Dave for making our 10th anniversary so wonderful!
This turn of the century Victorian is just stunning with 4 beautiful rooms plus a charming cottage next door (we stayed at the cottage). Really, ANY of the rooms would have been just as special. They are all different & beautifully decorated. The photos really don't do them due justice. The parlor & dining room soooo very inviting. Breakfast was a 3 or 4 course delight complete with candles and stunning service pieces. Wine & cheese, too, beautifully presented in the late pm. There are cookies and other little treats in the parlor as well. And, if you want to spend the morning in bed, they will bring breakfast to you!
We realy enjoyed the large jacuzzi tub in the wood paneled bathroom. And, the bed is sooo comfy. Great to wake up to mooing cows in the am.
When we arrived we were greeted with a lovely anniversary card and on our anniversary with a bottle of champagne and chocolates. Plus, the fridge was filled with drinks and other treats.
Unfortunatley, we didn't get to fully enjoy the immaculate grounds as we had so much we wanted to do and see. There is an enclosed ping pong table, a bocce ball court, beautiful swimming pool and just lovely grounds lovingly taken care of, I am sure.
This inn is well situated as well on a bucolic country road very near the center of town itself (Jackson). Two blocks or so down the road is a quaint Italian restaurant, Teresa's, where we enjoyed a fantastic lunch with superb service (Jamie had recommended this place in her email to us).
THINGS TO DO:
1) Exploring the local museums is really fun as they have so many interesting items for such small places! We found the museum in Sutter Creek and Amador City (just several miles from Jackson) to be interesting with knowledgeable curators. Unfortunately the museum in Jackson was closed (looks like it has been closed for some time, possibly due to budget cuts in CA). But, you can still see some items outside the museum. We picked up a local "things to do" paper and were intrigued by a story about Frank Fish of Amador City ( a local artifact hunter from the 1960s).
The museum in Sutter Creek is in the now closed Monteverde General Store and boy is there a @#$%load of treasures there from way back in the day, overseen by a wonderful woman who shared so much with us.
2) We, also, after reading another article, took a great drive through the backroads of Amador City to check out the site of a terrible massacre of settlers in 1855 by desperadoes (Lower Rancheria area). We both felt this part of gold country really has its own unique feel unlike other areas we are familiar with around the Jamestown area.
3) We visited The Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park in Pine Grove (also, a very short ride from the inn). It is a beautiful and peaceful area with a great feel to it and especially beautiful late in the afternoon with the sun peeking through the clouds.
4) Black Chasm Caverns is a photographer's delight (some formations found only here and nowhere else) (near Indian Grinding Rock SHP).
5) The tour of the Sutter Creek Mine very interesting, especially concerning its future plans.
6) A bit further out (but not far at all) are the towns of Plymouth and Fiddletown. The very popular restaurant Taste is located there but was closed when we visited. We did eat at a fabulous gourmet deli, though. The Plymouth Hotel (I think that is the name) looked very inviting as well). From our experiences in gold country, these small, historic hotels are filled with interesting photos of the olden days and, many, reported to be haunted as well! If you love architecture & history, visitng these hotels is a must.
All that remains of Fiddletown are several historic buildings, also a photographer's delight!! You really do pick up an eerie feeling walking along the road and seeing these buildings. And, apparently, some people do live very close to them. It was named Fiddletown as the settlers from the midwest would play their fiddles waiting for the rainy season!
7) Speaking of eerie, we did an evening tour of haunted Preston Castle (in Ione). It was built in 1894 as a boys' reform school and, suposedly, was an awfully violent and terrible place. It is so wierd to see an actual castle in this area and let me tell you when you see it, it brings chills!!! It is extremely scary looking from the outside and the inside is no better! You only see a very small part of the inside as the rest is too delapidated to be safe. This castle has been featured on several popular ghost hunting shows of late. They, also, offer overnight trips for very brave souls!! This place is a must see. We hope to get back here for another tour in the daylight. Also, they just finished filming a horror film here.
8) Lastly, just down the road from the inn is the Kennedy Mine and what are called the Kennedy Wheels. It is neat to walk up to see the wheels as well as the views from the top. Any history buff would love this.
There are so many places to explore and things to do not to mention Jackson Rancheria Casino as well. Also, if you are into shopping, lots of small town very quaint stores with some neat items.
And, after a full day of exploring how nice is it to come home to the Gate House Inn (and it really does feel like home thanks to its wonderful innkeepers Jamie & Dave). And, to top it all off, for the terrific B & B that it is, it is really resonably priced.
Jamie & Dave, we can't thank you enough for everything!!
