“Very special night”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

There aren't a lot of choices of hotels if you want to visit Point Reyes National Seashore. Weekends are hard to get a nearby room unless you book well in advance. We moved our trip around to arrive on a Sunday night instead of a Saturday night. SMART MOVE. The hotel had lots of rooms at a lower rate and upgraded us to a better room for free. These rooms are small! But they are wonderful. We had our own deck outside facing the inlet. They have a boardwalk out to the bay but not enough water to have many birds. It was quiet and very pleasant. The grounds are wonderful. There is no breakfast included so we picked up some things the night before. They have a lounge with a refrigerator and microwave, coffee, and free bisquettes, books about bird watching, maps of the area, a pool table and a fireplace.

“Cozy little inn close to nature”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights over the Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 2011). This is a cozy little inn off the beaten track about 15 min drive from the small town of Point Reyes Station.

Pros: The place is a haven for watching wildlife; it’s right on the edge of the water so there’s all kinds of birds and waterfowl to watch. There was osprey flying over almost daily. It’s lovely to wake up and go to the communal kitchen/living area and eat breakfast watching hummingbirds feeding on the other side of the window. It’s in a beautiful setting. The communal living area is a really nice touch – there’s a pool table, shared games and books, a TV, and a log fire. This is a good place to chat to other guests. Point Reyes Station (the closest small town) has a large, well-stocked grocery store that will supply even the most elegant of self-catering guests, and picnickers. The staff were very friendly. Top tip; some of the rooms have little terraces attached, so try to opt for one of those; we didn’t have one, but it would have been lovely to take a private breakfast there in the mornings looking at the beautiful view.

Cons: The rooms are not sound proof, more than that you seemed to be able to hear everything that’s happening in the rooms either side of you, or out on the walk way in front of the rooms. We had a family with young children next door to us for one of the nights and basically had to get up early the next day because the kids were up & crying. You could even hear people walking around, talking and snoring. Take ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper. Apart from that there are no restaurants within walking distance; the distance from town means you have to drive to dinner making drinking alcohol problematic. The rooms are also a little dark.

In summery if you love the outdoors, and wildlife (especially birds) this place would be a gem, this is a good base from which to explore the rural beauty of Point Reyes. but it’s quite remote, and not the right spot for a super romantic, private stay because of the communal lounge and sound-sharing rooms.

If you do drive into town the best meal we had was at Osteria Stellina – the brisket was the tastiest thing I’d eaten in a long time.

Room Tip: Get a room with a private terrace.

“Motel Inverness Perfect Choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

Motel Inverness is the perfect base for your Point Reyes adventure. It is located on the shores of Tomales Bay and affords unrestricted views of wildlife that inhabit the area. The property itself is well-maintained however the rooms are somewhat small but very comfortable. The staff (Lynn) makes sure that your visit goes well.

“Terrific setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

If you love nature and a quiet place, this is for you. The motel is situated right at the end of Tomales Bay. In the morning we walked out the plank walkway over the wetlands and viewed egrets, geese and 3 golden eagles (!!) right overhead. Although the room was compact (only one chair to sit in), it was a nice room which looked out over a lovely garden and then the wetlands beyond. The lodge room has a fireplace and chairs to sit in and enjoy the view, as well as dishes and a microwave (there's a frig in your room), so if you want to bring your own food, it's easy enough to do. The person at the desk was extremely friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: There are only about 10 rooms. Pick one of the slightly more expensive ones to get a bit more room...
