The Lodge at Pine Cove is a nice B&B for weekend getaways. We've spent the last two New Years' Eve there and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Lodge is at about the 6000' elevation mark and approx. 4 miles outside of Idyllwild. The first year we stayed in the Lily Room which is the largest of the four. The second year we were in the Taquitz Room which, while comfortable, was a little too small for us. The bathroom wasn't in great shape either. Both rooms have doors that exit onto a nice wooden deck that face east so you get morning sun. We spent quite a lot of time out there listening to the wind in the pines and enjoying a good read in the warm sun.
The common area consists of a cozy living room with fireplace and plenty of seating. Music is often played over the speakers, typically Classical and the volume is usually on the low side so as to not be intrusive.
The breakfasts are very nice and served family-style, always fresh and warm with nice muffins, OJ, coffee and fruit. The pancakes and French Toast dishes they've prepared were both excellent, and steamed-scrambled eggs made a nice accompanying side dish. Both owners are very friendly and accommodating and will chat with you about almost anything. Our New Years celebrations with them included champagne, cider and fun board games!
My take is that most folks who stay there are looking for a quiet time so it's a nice, peaceful environment. Idyllwild is a small town but does have a few interesting stores, a movie theater and the lovely Cafe Aroma for nice lunches/dinners. It can be either chilly in the winter or moderate, and the summers are on the warm side. The town and Lodge make a nice location for those interested in hiking the many trails available.
