I flew into Oakland mid-evening, rented a vehicle and drove 8 miles south to the motel. At first, I was a bit concerned. I had to check-in through a secure night window with a built-in sliding metal tray to pass the documents back and forth. While waiting I looked into the reception area and spied a TV, travel brochure rack, coffee maker, and complimentary daily newspapers. When I asked about entering, I was told not until early morning for the continental breakfast.
So I parked my vehicle and went to my room. Surprisingly, not much downside here if you're expectations aren't 5-star. There was a fridge and microwave, 77 channel TV (receive the remote when you check-in), iron and board, a vanity area, and a separate sofa. I stayed 3 days and the room was always cleaned early, and the maintenance worker made the repairs listed from the previous day (my window was stuck closed).
But should you coose this lodging, try to negotiate a relatively low rate. Because of the isolated location by the off-ramp, the rooms here seem to sell at a strong discount to the motels along Mission, Foothill, or even the MainStay down the road at Hesperian and A.
The motel is located right off of I-880 (old Highway 17), west of the overpass. But you'll have to travel a bit for shopping and food. Travel A street east 2 miles to either Mission or Foothill, or ask directions to the Southland or Bay Fair shops, each being about 4 miles away. Cal State U sits on a bluff overlooking the bay and valley as you travel south on Mission about 2 miles.
To get to SF, Oakland, Berkeley, or Walnut Creek, simply take the BART train from the depot off of A street near Mission. Trains run until after midnight. If you don't have a vehicle to get to the train (there's a free parking structure), inquire about the 83 or 85 bus. However, when these buses are not running, you'll need to take a cab. I don't recommend the walk in the evening.
In the morning, the office opens and you can grab some breakfast snacks (bring a sack) and the daily newspaper. If you're aggressive with your travels, you can do a day trip to Yosemite. The door to valley floor round trip is about 400 miles, mostly freeway.
