We spent the nights of Dec. 31, 2011 and Jan 1, 2012 at this hotel. Weather was unseasonably mild. The hotel has been nicely renovated in the not too distant past. We had a handicapped room with 2 queen beds. My elderly father was with us, and I wanted to keep him on the first floor. The bathroom was huge, with a flat entry from the marble floor into the big plastic shower insert. No rim, shower curtain. Nice shower massage with a long adjustable height hose. I was afraid of water running all over the bathroom floor, but this didn't happen. First person to shower just laid their used towel down to gather any drips that escaped. There was a huge counter with one basin, lots of room to arrange things. The toiletries were not fancy, but not offensive. They were properly restocked for our second night. The kleenex and toilet paper were of a lower grade than I'd like.
The rooms were better lit than most hotel rooms with two individually-controlled recessed lights, a desk light and a light on the nightstand between the beds. The bathroom had two sets of lights. Figuring out the switches took a bit of time, but we got the hang of them all pretty quickly.
Turns out a motion sensor seems to control whether the thermostat actually kicks in, so the room heat took a bit, but once it was going, it was fine.
The two queen beds were comfortable, the sheets very soft, the beds soft enough, and the furnishings were modern and clean. There was one fleecy blanket and the usual (heavy to me) coverlet on the bed. I took the fleece and doubled it over my dad and used our own down comforter which we brought from home. Very comfy. Pillows were standard hotel fare. Nothing fancy, synthetic, not down. Medium thickness, I'd say.
The room had a good sized refrigerator, which we had to turn on when we arrived, but worked well, though we noticed a bit of a repetitive noise out of it. Muted. Didn't really bother anyone else, and I always use earplugs in hotels. Frankly, it seemed quite quiet in the room. It had a microwave along with the requisite coffee maker. We brought our own hotpot and Starbuck's VIA coffee, so cannot comment on the quality of the provided fare. The LCD TV was decent enough, though the signal didn't seem to be HD. The room was really clean and comfortable.
For the winter rate, I can't think of a better deal in the area. EXCELLENT room when compared to what else is out there. In summer, I think I'd rather take the money and stay in the park, in lesser-equipped rooms, just to save driving time. But getting a room in the park during peak season is HARD.
The folks who checked me in, answered my question about the thermostat, and checked me out were very nice, very kind and helpful. I felt quite happy to have chosen to spend our holiday weekend there. The drive into Yosemite this time of year was quiet and with the weather so pleasant, very easy.
We ate at the Cocina Michoacana in Groveland. I had a penchant for Mexican, and we enjoyed our dinners there. About a 10-15 minute drive from the hotel.
I would definitely stay here again! Maybe even this coming weekend - to stage for a more aggressive day hike - now that we have seen what the unusual conditions are like!
