We stayed at the Evergreen Lodge over the Christmas break, our third time staying there and our first winter trip to Yosemite. We opted for one of the newer 1-bedroom cabins with a gas stove, which worked really well to keep it cosy-it wasn't just decorative. The weather turned out to be fairly mild but I think it would still be warm even with more typical winter weather. The bed was fairly comfortable--a bit too firm for my liking. The bathroom was basic, but very clean and the shower was pretty decent. I'd definitely recommend the newer cabins vs. the very old ones, having stayed in both. It's worth the price difference. We were in the Wapama area--slightly further away from the restaurant and bar. I think the Muir cabins might have the best location, and the best chance of a view.
The food in the restaurant seemed a lot better this time around, they have all the basic options and also some pretty good vegetarian and fancier dishes. And a good wine list. Overall it's a very friendly atmosphere, and although there are quite a few cabins it feel secluded and quiet. They're adding a pool for 2012, which might change that... or not! it's very kid-friendly, lots of outdoor space for them and a good games room too, that keeps them occupied.
Hikes that we did: Cathedral lakes (a bit tough) May Lake-beautiful, Mirror Lake, Wapama Falls at Hetch Hetchy. They're all good! Watch for altitude adjustment on the hikes from the Tioga Road. And we had breakfast at the Awahnee one morning-prepare for a wait, or try reserving in advance.
Room Tip: The Muir and Sierra cabins have a great location
