First, the good (and it's mostly all good).
My second-floor room (chosen because previous reviewers had cautioned about noise from upstairs guests) was large and beautifully appointed. The temperpedic bed was very comfortable (thank you, Courtyard Suites ... a bad mattress will absolutely ruin any stay anywhere). I had a standard room, so was told I was not permitted to use the covered parking, which is reserved for tenants of suites ... but it was not raining or anything, so this was not annoying. Parking spaces were always available during my stay, though navigating the large fountain in the middle of the back parking lot to actually access the "standard" spaces closest to my room was sometimes a bit tricky. Really not sure why that fountain is there, or at least, there where it is. Check-in was lovely ... friendly, efficient, pleasant.
The location of the hotel is quite nice ... very close to downtown, but without all the parking and "area noise" issues that sort of location can sometimes bring. I've read wonderful things about evening food, but did not have a chance to try this, as I was in town for a specific purpose, and was kept busy from very early until very late at night.
The "bad" for me was that my room was cold and could not, using only the room's heater, actually be warmed to the point that I did not wake up repeatedly the first night shivering uncontrollably. I stayed in early December, and temperatures outside were quite chilly. I had been concerned about temperature, as some previous reviewers had complained about being cold, so I asked when I checked in if I'd be able to control the heat in my room, and was assured that I would, from the dedicated thermostat.
I think there are a few reasons for the problem. First, the wood shutters over the window and patio door provide very little insulation. Another issue is that the heating unit, located right under the window, has louvers designed to push heat vertically straight up rather than out into the room. Standing over the heater while it was running, I could feel a pleasant (but not powerful) warmth on my skin. Taking literally one step away from the heater, even while it was running, I could feel an unpleasant draft. Also, the heater is clearly not designed to "push" hot (or, in this case, warm) air at all forcefully, so it was not surprising that it was able to make little or no headway into warming the room.
As designed (and located), any heat the heater was providing was pushed directly up into the room's high ceiling space. I tried (briefly) running the ceiling fan over the bed, but while this may have redirected slightly warmer air down toward me, I couldn't feel it over the intolerably cool breeze that was being generated by the spinning fan blades and making me colder, so I turned the fan off.
Also contributing to the problem was that the thermostat is either not calibrated correctly or simply isn't working correctly. The thermostat was located on a wall, and I turned the "desired temp" up as high as it would go (80). Throughout the night, the thermostat continually insisted that the room had reached 80 degrees, and would SHUT THE HEATER OFF. There is no way any part of that room was 80 degrees, which would have been miserably, uncomfortably warm ... my educated guess would be somewhere in the range of MAYBE 65 - 67 degrees, max.
I did not complain to the staff about the temperature problem, largely because I could see no way for them to fix it, short of giving me extra blankets ... and I had already spent one very uncomfortable night trying to sleep beneath heavy piles of stuff and wrapped up in too many clothes. I wore multiple pairs of socks (including on my hands), a sweater, sweatpants, and with literally everything in my own bag and the room that could be pressed into service (including the heavy [not thick] bedspread and both supplied guest robes) spread out over me for insulation. All that weight pressing down on me made me very uncomfortable.
Note, too, that the bathroom is as far from the heater as it is possible to get, so this room is particularly cold in the middle of the night.
The next day, I borrowed a space heater from a local friend, hauled it up to my room that night, plugged it in. Half an hour later, the room was very comfortable, and I slept without a problem.
My room did not have a fireplace. I do not know if rooms with fireplaces are warmer.
I live close enough to Grass Valley that when I come up to see friends, I'll be driving from home. Based on this stay, I would choose Courtyard Suites again in a shot, because so much about it is so good -- but I'll know next time to bring my own trusty Vornado space heater from home. If you are planning a car trip to the area in the winter months, I suggest you do the same ... if you don't need it, no problem; if you do, you'll be very glad you brought it.
Room Tip: Had no trouble with noise with an upstairs room ... don't know if I had any neighbors the weeken...
