“Beautiful retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2010

We stayed in the Rocky Terrace cottage for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The young man at reception, Tom, was very friendly and gave us plenty of tips on wineries to visit and things to see & do whilst in Sonoma. Tom gave us a wineries guide which saved us tasting fees and suggested good local restaurants - all of which turned out to be excellent.

The breakfasts were really good & we helped ourselves to cookies and coffee from the common dining area. It was nice to base ourselves in such a beautiful & tranquil location to enjoy this great wine region.

“Left early”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

There were ants, bugs and it was not cleaned well. There was not even a bar of soap in the bathroom, and very limited amenities. The bed did not have box springs and was old and sagged--very uncomfortable. Lots of street noise. We arrived late, so had to stay the night, but left the next morning rather than stay the weekend.

“Just o.k., had expected more, and of questionable value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

My wife, our adult daughter and I just spent two nights in the "Valley of the Moon" room. As a B&B it was passable, but at $253.08 per night (inclusive of taxes) I did not consider it a good value. For half that it would have been. I'm looking for creature comforts and amibance in a B&B, or at least one of them, and this place fell short of expectations on both. It may be that the Sonoma Valley is just a pricey place compared to most of the rest of the world-- it was our first visit. In our experience owner-operated B&B's are generally better than staffed ones, and this one appeared to be in the latter category. I'm not sure we ever saw the owner, Kristi, I think, and I do not believe she lived on the property. Owner-operators usually (but not always, of course) care about the details. Staff are just trying to get by. I had the feeling that Glenelly was in the just-trying-to-get-by category. Breakfasts were typical B&B, but not outstanding and and the service was somewhat slack (untimely). However, the house cat, Lars, was very friendly. Note that my overall rateing is "average," not worse. Next time in the area, if ever, I'd try something else.

“Charming, well-located spot with friendly staff and delicious breakfasts!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

Our recent visit to the Glenelly Inn was the perfect place for three days of cycling followed each day by a soak in their hot tub and comfortable night's rest in the charming guest room. We were impressed by the gourmet breakfasts that fueled us for the day's ride. This B&B is perfectly located to enjoy Sonoma's friendly wineries and to explore the beautiful country lanes on a bike. It could also be enjoyed without a bike! A very comfortable, reasonably-priced spot.

“Shabby but no chic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2010

I really wanted to like this place as I have loads of respect for small business owners trying to keep something unique going, but this was a huge disappointment. We chose this place as it had been described in other publications as being child friendly which was a really nice thing in the somewhat anti-child wine country.

The property itself is very nice, the gardens are pretty and the touches of hospitality were nice, coffee and cookies that you could help yourself to. However the room was well below expectations. We took the Jack London Suite- first it was not a suite by most definitions but a room with an extra bed in it. The bathroom was dreadful- claw foot bath is fine, but combined with old cheap lino floor, nasty cheap pine fittings and artex peach coloured walls it was all just tatty and outdated.
An eclectic approach to interior design is a difficult thing to pull off- it kind of works in the garden here- rusty watering cans with flowers, little animal shaped ornaments are nice- but in the rooms, a dusty pair of antique skis in one corner and a pub style Burton Ale mirror over the bed just makes it feel like an old peoples home. It feels as if there hasn't been sufficent investment here, at least not in all the rooms.
I would echo the other reviews which say this is not the usual B&B experience as regards the host. We met the owner- in so far as she came out of the kitchen when we were standing there- but she didn't speak to us. To be honest thats fine, but if you are looking to be "hosted" in the traditional B&B sense then thats not what you'll get here.
The breakfast was ok- nothing to rave about - although really did appreciate being asked for the childrens' choices the night before- which was a nice touch.
With a lot more money invested in this place and the hiring of a person with a slightly more up to date interior design esthetic this would be great.

Glen ellen itself is lovely and dinner at the Fig Cafe was super. The Berzinger Winery was wonderful, really interesting tour and chidren made very welcome.
