We booked through Hotels.com, I won't recommend the web site either, after our experience:
A month before our trip to Eureka, CA to move my brother into his dorm at HSU ( from So. Cal ), we booked two nights with Econo Lodge in Eureka. Originally intending to stay in Santa Rosa the night before, we decided to make the whole trip in one day. We called Econo Lodge-they had lost the reservation. After arguing for 30 minutes, they somehow found it, but claimed to be full for the evening, and referred us to Best Value Inn and Suites as their sister hotel: both are owned by the an Indian husband and wife. At Best Value, we took our room, no key card-just keys. $85 a night for a $50 room. No room service the next day, we had to argue that as well. When they did it was not complete. Scary area. Anyway, we decided to remain there for the next two days and asked if the reservation could be switched to Best Value, since the owners were the same folks. They said sure, no problem. When we returned home, this morning, we found a no-show charge of $66 had been put on our card from EconoLodge. We are in the process of disputing the charge through both hotels, and Hotels.com. These people are fine with ripping off customers. Other problems included the smoke and smell of the hotel owners cooking, it was unavoidable( they left chilies in a big container on the roof each day to sunbake ), and the office is umanned much of the time. They do not open at the posted time. This is America, where major name hotels and motels are expected to be managed properly. This was offensive, and we will continue the dispute. To be fair they did give us extra towels when asked, and saved a couple items my brother left for him to pick up later.
